New Q9450 system

Thread Starter
I know that there isn't much info out yet on the overclockability of the Q9450s, but was curious as to if anybody might be able to make an educated guess on what I'll be able to get it up to.

I've read a bit about overclocking in general, but this will be my first actual OC of any of my systems(save for an old Celeron I tried to blow up). So any input or advice would be much appreciated. I'm also considering OC'ing my video card and memory. I think I'll have the cooling for it...

System specs:

Motherboard - Intel DX38BT
Processor - Intel Q9450
Memory - CORSAIR 2GB KIT TWIN3X2048-1333C9DHX
Power Supply - BFG 800W
Hard Drive(s) - WD Caviar 500gb X2 (raid0)
Video Card - BFG 8800GT
Case - Antec 900
CPU Cooler - Thermalright Ultra 120 w/Scythe S-FLEX S-FDB fan
GPU Cooler - Thermalright HR-03GT w/Scythe S-FLEX S-FDB fan

Think that's a little optimistic lol

I'd say 3.3Ghz - 3.5Ghz

3.6Ghz for sure, 3.8 maybe depending on volts. 4.0Ghz is FSB bound (~475 on x48) on the C1 revision 45nm CPU's.

A 400fsb Q9450 will have a clock speed of 3.2ghz. To hit 3.6ghz you will need an fsb of 450. Not all boards manage that. 4 ghz requires an fsb of 500mhz. Thats impossible on all but the best boards.

I'm a little confused...aren't I quite a bit over 450?

DX38BT

"With support for 1333 MHz front side bus, fast DDR3 memory and overclocking, Intel Desktop Board DX38BT delivers the gaming performance you deserve." (I love reading this kind of crap. The description on my POWER SUPPLY promised me I'd be "owning noobs" too haha.)

Don't let DDR3 speeds fool you, for example:

Say a board supports DDR3 1800.....that does not mean it's capable of a 900Mhz FSB. People are relating DDR3 speeds as an idea of what a DDR3 mobo may be capable of....but in reality FSB above 450MHz on a Quad is no easy task.

QDR rates are what are important.....

Interesting...we'll see how it goes, I'll definitely need to do some more reading. I've been having trouble finding an "easy guide" that isn't 20 pages long. I'm not trying to set any OC'ing records, but with my cooling I don't see any reason not to put it over 3.0(assuming it's very stable).

What are your thoughts on GPU and memory overclocking?

Thanks for all the replies so far by the way
