That's what a 3-core Phenom is - a 4-core Phenom where, in the fab, it was noticed that one core was faulty. There are no Phenoms, specified as quad core, with a faulty core.

Thealmightyone, that would explain the low yields that I keep hearing about it with the quads.

I haven't kept up with processor news recently. Didn't know AMD were STILL having problems with the Phenoms.

Thealmightyone, in it's current state of production I'm not sure if the problem still exists but I believe when they were first being fabbed there was a low yield problem. I'm guessing those are being left over for tri-cores

I had thought that was due to the errata and not faulty cores. All quads have some that come through with a defective core, AMD just decided to capitalize on it. Now, why it took them so long to fix the errata and why the B3's still OC fairly poorly, *shrug*

Dralb, isn't that the low yield issue that AMD was having with the Phenoms when the first started fabbing them?

Dude, he's giving you $200 to OC his CPU. He likes phenom. Keep it that way. Just clip on a Zalman CNPS9700 LED (AFAIK its the best AMD cooler), get him to return his 9600gts for 2 3870s, and take it all the way.
Remember, you can overclock phenoms 'per core' so if one core isn't as good, you can overclock the others more.

Haunt, where did you hear this ?
Heard it around on OCN, that the 3rd core don't work right, thats why often the Phenom wont OC very high cos' the 3rd core is like 'HURRRR I HATE YOU'

Bakes has a good point

I suppose. Really, it could all be related. I honestly haven't been keeping up with the latest Phenom news. I read a few reviews of the new B3's, but haven't researched the low yields. All I know is I am still hoping for a monster quad from AMD, lol.

lol, I wish I could get $1 per mhz on my E2140 OC
