Friend Needs a Budget Computer: - Page 3

I'd go along with this... Generic Case + stock cooling scares me a bit... but then again, it's not a quad putting out 200+W of heat

Only thing I'd change would be to look into a better Case and snag a cheaper 500W PSU... I doubt this system really needs a 600W GameXstream (I mean: that's what I'm using to power my rig for christ's sake!)

As for the original idea: I certainly wouldn't go with a case bundled PSU and I would definitely get at least 2GB of DDR-800 RAM

Hmmm Go with a

8800GTS 320MB $114.00
Some P35 Motherboard.
E2180 Cpu or a e6550 Cpu
2x1GB 6400 memory there like um $25.00- $40.00
450 watt corsair Power supply.
Any old Cheap Case that you can find.
A 250GB hard drive or 500GB hard drive

250's are $50.00 And 500's are $99.00
And a Dvd drive $25.00

That will set you about 40 bucks under 500, And also. you can buy a nicer sound card or motherboard with that extra cash

Check any canadian computer vendor, and you'll see that's still more expensive there. The exchange rate doesn't have much affect, since a LOT of the stuff doesn't come from the US, but from somewhere in Asia. Thus, the US$ exchange rate does not have much influence.

Well i suppose in asia it is.

Exchange rates matter little for the end user in general. The market size matters more (~300 million US citizens v. ~33 million Canadians...)

But now, my thoughts (all from www.directcanada.com)
  • Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L ATX LGA775 P35 1333FSB 1PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN Motherboard: $87.27CAD
  • Diamond Viper Radeon HD 2600XT 800MHZ 256MB 800MHZ GDDR3 Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out Video Card: $115.44CAD
  • Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 Dual Core Processor LGA775 1.8GHZ: $71.58CAD
  • FSP Fortron FSP400-60THN 400W ATX12V 2.0 20/24PIN Power Supply: $44.10CAD
  • Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC2-5400 DDR2-667 CL 4-4-4-12: $45.74CAD
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 16MB Cache Hard Drive: $57.88CAD
  • Samsung SH-S203B Black Sata DVD+RW: $25.88CAD
  • Coolermaster Elite RC-330 ATX Blk Case: $39.96CAD
$487.85 CAD$ total (plus all that tax and shipping...)

That's the best I can manage.... and I had to cut down on the video card quite a bit.

"Looks like a nice motherboard. I'lk have to look into that. Do you think it will allow the CPU to overclock well? I have heard P35 boards in general are quite good, anyone with a P35 around here?"

"I'm pretty confused about this choice. What is wrong with something like THIS . It's a 512MB nVidia 9600GT for $139.99, surely the performance increase would be worth the extra $25. I'm sure I could shave a couple tens from somewhere."

"Everything else looks cool!"

I'd personally recommend the Antec Earthwatts 500w PSU. Its a great budget PSU. There's absolutely no need for a 600w GameXtreme PSU on a tight budget. I would NOT however stay with the stock CoolerMaster PSU.

man, 500 IS tight

i just threw one together but i like shopping at Direct Canada, they have free shipping on orders over $300

for $100 more that computer can go from meh to solid

the deal they have on the antec sonata w/ 500w earthwatt's psu is $98, make that my sole contribution, lol
