should there be a big difference with these cards, i tried a galaxy 8600gt OC and it wasnt much difference in the graphics playing cod4
post #2 of 9
Well it does have SM4 support while your x850xt only has support for SM2.Although if I remember correctly the x850xt was an amazing card during its time,so the difference will probably be minimal.

What processor are you talking about?

You'll see more gains from a video card than you will from a processor but if your processor is too slow you'll bottleneck the card and won't be able to use it to it's full potential.

You'd be better off putting your money into a 9600GT or if you have the extra bankroll an 8800GT. Then when you have the extra cash you could pick up a cheap E2xxx series processor if your motherboard will accept LGA775 (aka Socket T).

You can fill in your system specs by using the User CP link at the top of the screen. It'll help us help you a little bit better.

My friend is running an x800 AGP and I am running the GTS's and crysis is huge difference. But with Shader 2.0 your games that use a lot of shader 3.0 will look like crap and have graphical errors.

I would say the 8600 just for the fact that it is up to date with shaders for games.

Normaly I wouldnt reccomend the 8600's to anyone.

Intel 945G ChipSet

i have anther system with E2xxx but it doesnt have a PSU Atm, so you think the 8600GT OC will run better in that once iget the psu?

In my current system running x850XT 256mb ddr2 there isnt much differnce in graphics when playing COD4 and the 8600GT OC has 512mb DDr2. both are pci-e.

I guess its either the p4 CPU or the card is bad for gaming.

anyone know?

is the 9600GT a big difference?
According to this link they are about the same performance-wise. But you got the 512MB DDR2. The GDDR3 would have been better, and 256MB is all you really need with the 128-bit memory bus.

I like my 8600GT (256MB GDDR3). I had to mod it all to hell to get it to play current games decently (see sig rig), but now it will run Crysis at 1280x720 (720p on 42" HDTV) on medium (few high) settings and get an average 40-45 FPS (verified with RivaTuner). Gets just over 8000 in 3DMark06 with an A64 X2 brisbane @ 2.9 GHz.

Of course, if you have the money, an 8800-series (G92) or 9600GT would be a better choice (and a lot less work). For the price, the 8800GS is a good buy, but the 9600GT is better. Of course the 512MB 8800GT is slightly better than that, and I've heard of a lot of issues with the 9600's.

Your call.
