TEKSystems?

Wasn't sure where to put this, but has anyone here dealt with TEKSystems? Any opinions on them?

The recruiting agency? If so, yes - I was hired by them. If no, is that a brand of networking product?

Yes, the recruiting company. I hear lots of bad things about them, what is your take?

All forms of employment agency are crap. If you're after any type of job you're always better off applying directly. You'll have a permanent contract and usually better holiday time if you bypass the agency and go sraight to the company.

when i 1st got out from tech school in 2000 they got me my 1st job. it was with fujitsu i worked with them until 9/11/01 yes 9/11. bsically most of my work from early 2000-2004 was with tek systems i worked and travelled under there banner it was a good starting point for me in the industry. i got to meet and travel half of the U.S and even go to canada cause of them. you just gotta keep on them if u want work cause there turn around with techs are insane. Basically iff u can get in good with one recruiter then that's pretty much it and just get on him about work cause the more they see ur willing they will pound u with work. GL.

They treated me well. I was looking to relocate to California so had my resume posted on Dice and Monster. They found my resume on Dice and were really friendly and helpful and got me hooked up with my current job. Being that I was interviewing from out of state, they did a good job of helping make arrangements for both phone and in-person interviews. They were very good at keeping me in the loop with updates too.

We're actually now working with the same recruiter there to find another person from my team.

I've been on both sides of the buisness now - the side of being hired by a company and the side of looking for someone to hire and from both sides the two recruiters I've worked with have been honest and helpful. Though like any headhunting company, it is all about getting a person to fill the role that's open so that they can be paid. But I'd totally do business with them again.

What were the not so good things you've heard? Maybe it was just your local branch or a couple of unscrupulous folks there? Headhunting is a rough gig - sometimes it's all about putting a warm body in a chair to make money.

Edit: the job I was hired for was an full time position - not a contract. And the opening we have is another full time position. I have not worked with them in a contracting capacity, but I imagine that they're just like any other contractor with high pay and low benefits (that's the contract trade-off from my experience).

They contacted me about a 1 year contract with option for full time after. I was looking here and it seems that they sound kind of iffy.

Think I should just go to an interview and see what happens?

Yeah, if the job is interesting, what's the harm?

BTW, it's not always the recruiter lying when they say the company is stalling on the hire. We're trying to hire someone right now and our Teksystems recruiter sent someone over to interview. We loved her and are going to make her an offer but the are a bunch of layers of red tape in our hiring process. Poor girl has been waiting for a couple of weeks now and I'm sure is starting to think the recruiter is lying to her....but really it's a hold up with my company.

Its the contract for hire thing that has me worried.
Take the interview and then when you're talking to the actual hiring manager (not the Teksystems recruiter), it should come up. And if it doesn't, tell them that you understand that it's a "contract for hire" position and ask them to confirm. Ultimately, it's the hiring manager's decision to hire you on full time - not Teksystems. And unless you really love your job now, there's no harm in taking a 6 month gig and having it end - you'll just need to find something else afterward. All recruiting agencies will try to get their current employees into a position before hiring someone from the outside. So once you're in, you'll get first crack at new positions.

BTW, being that it's a contract position (at least until the hiring part comes along), they'll make you sign a non-complete agreement. Don't freak out - it's a standard agreement. If your state is a "right to work" state, it will never hold up in court unless you're blatantly stealing business. It's an empty threat that every agency uses to keep people working for them since that's their business. I know this because I've been in the situation and had a friend in the recruiting biz.

Anyway, hope that helps with your decision. It kinda boils down to whether you love the job you're already in and if the job you're being offered an interview for would be one you'd love to do too - even if it turns out to be a short term deal.
