Shanghai (China) – Intel’s is showcasing the power of its upcoming processors with a new ‘Smoke’ demo which rains fiery destruction upon a virtual shack. Slated to debut later this year, the multi-cored Hyperthreading Nehalem processors will be able to easily crunch through real-time particle physics like the one shown in the demo.

How about they show us some benchmarks? Flames do nothing for me. How fast can it crunch numbers?

QFT. All I care about is how fast I can encode my DVD's to x264.
My GPU is for games. Not my CPU.

This isn't anything new... We saw this already with Valve's Particle Test.

TBH 60K particles doesn't seem like that many to me.

Of course Intel buys Havok and wants to showcase the feableheim as the bee's knees. Oh well, let them have their moment.

Are they sure this is really Nehalem? From what I have been reading Nehalem has a new version of Hyper-Threading, Thus the system in the DEMO should have 2 Quad cores with 4 cores and 8 Threads each for a toltal of 16 threads not 8.

Don't suppose you have a link to a download of it by any chance? I know Valve removed it because it had some plot details of Episode two in it, but now that Episode two is out....

Now, back on topic. I wish they would just give us something we could use to compare Nehalem to our current CPUs....

Heres the torrent for the valve particle benchmark if anybody is still looking for it.
