Help Please Windows Memory Diagnostic Crashes 680i

Thread Starter
Windows Memory Diagnostic (DOS) Crashes on XFX 680i LT/Core 2 Quad Q6600

I have been reading this forum for about 3 hours now, learning a lot about the 680i so I thought I'd now post my issue.

My system has been unstable for about a month now (it's 5 months old, built by a TigerDirect tech) and I have done a lot of research already and I think I have covered all the "basic checks" (update drivers, update bios (I did not reset CMOS yet! will do tonight!), CHKDSK /F, underclock the 8800 GT videocard )

My system was never over-clocked and was stable for about 3 months, now it sometimes it runs for an hour, sometimes it crashes in windows and sometimes it locks-up while the BIOS is loading and when the BIOSs crashes I have to unplug the computer for a few minutes before the system will post (otherwise it just sits at a black screen)

Could it be possible that all four of my 1 gig memory chips went bad at the same time?

When the DOS Windows Memory Diagnostic crashes and locks up I get tons of random characters on the screen and sometimes I get this error: "TRAP 00000006 EXCEPTION"

I have tested each stick of memory in each of the 4 channels and they all fail and crash as above in 1-2 minutes. I upped the votage on the memory from 1.850 to 2.1 and that allowed the memory checker to run about 15 minutes before crashing.

Below is what is currently in the system:

2x Corsair XMS2 DHX 2048MB Dual Channel PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB) - 4 Gigs total

XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard, NVIDIA, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express, SLI Ready, Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0 & Firewire,

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor BX80562Q6600 - 2.40GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket 775, Processor with Fan

XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX Video Card - FREE Company of Heroes PC Game, 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card

Many many thanks, this forums seems very helpful from what I've read. If I need to clairify anything please let me know.

*EDIT*
The game that really kills my system is City of Heroes, see this thread if you want a long drawn out explination of what I've been doing the past weeks (my DXDIAG is on the first post if that helps)...

*EDIT2*

Going to post some relevant information from that thread:

-------------------------------------------
nTune shows ALL RED boxes (bad) for my voltages, here are the readings:

After some research I downloaded the ATI Tool.

There are 4 tests you can run. My systems crashes on 3 of them. Here are the log files:

It sounds like you covered all the bases. The only thing to do now is reset the BIOS then test again with a set of RAM you know works. Hopefully you have an extra set somewhere or you can borrow some from a friend.

With the new set just test one stick at a time in the first slot, if those fail the motherboard could be bad and would require an RMA. If they work fine then yes your current RAM is bad and should be RMA'd.

also, try to run the memory diagnostic with just one stick of ram in your system at a time. That will tell you which sticks may or may not be bad. Also, download and run a copy of memtest86+ and make sure you run it natively (i.e. not in windows)

Hopefully that helps some.

First off, never use anything to auto overclock.. EVER...

Second, check your RAM voltage, it should be printed on the RAM what voltage and timings you should run at.

Third, don't use the Windows Memory Diagnostic. Use something that will not touch the hard drive, like Memtest86, which is a bootable CD, or it comes with many Linux Live CD's like Ubuntu.

Downloading mem86

I reduced to 2 gigs of memory and I got to Windows and I see CPUZ is showing only a 6x for the CPU and ram at 400mhz... I guess the BIOS lowered the settings?

Installed a new motherboard (exactly the same) and the sytem boots to Windows no problem.

One question BIOS sets the CPU multiplier to 9x but CPUz is showing a 6x Multiplier, any ideas what that is about?
Its called something along the lines of "speedstep" its an option in the bios that will slow your clock and multiplier when your cpu is idle. It can and for overclocking reasons should usually be disabled.

Just go to the bios screen and look around for something that sounds like that. Hope that helps
