[Softpedia] Consoles Will Be Dead in 10 Years - Who can you believe? - Page 2

I have thought this all along.

Consoles are damn near PCs anymore anyway with limited cheap ram and CPUs with no instruction sets and a 1 - 2 year old GPU all thrown into a little bitty "tower"

There is no life for a console after this generation in MHO. PC parts are becoming so cheap you can build a nice gaming rig for 500 bucks anymore.

Prices drop a little bit more and people are going to wake up and realize that spending 500 bucks (just to get started) on a console you cant upgrade and will look like *&^% in 2 years is just stupid when you can build an upgradeable machine that will do all of your tasks for the same amount and all it takes is a graphics card every other year to stay current over the life of a console.

I have a 5 year old Athlon 64 PC that has 2 gigs of ram and I have replaced the graphics card ONCE in it from a 6800 to a x1950pro. That computer cost me about 950 bucks and it STILL plays every game maxed out (except for crysis of course)

If motorcycles started getting doors, windshields, and 4 wheels, and cost the same amount, wouldn't you just rather buy the car instead???

Why would consoles die? The video game industry is booming. It's not PC sales that generate the massive sales....it's consoles, plain and simple.

The video game industry would still be booming mike. Money would just be allocated elsewhere.

PC sales generated 7.8 billion dollars last year from RETAIL alone and is projected to sell 9 billion in retail alone this year. If that isn't booming, considering D2D and Steam are not taken into account, I don't know what is.

Consoles are good for certain types of games just like PCs are good for certain types of games. But you bet if they brought GOW or Gran Tourismo, just to name a couple, to all platforms, I would rather be sitting in front of my 2560x1600(random res mind you) monitor with a superior Logitech controller any day.

Well the article states the reasoning....

Quote:
In a recent interview with ThatVideoGameBlog, he has clearly stated that he believes "dedicated games devices i.e. Consoles will die in the next 5 to 10 years. The business model is very risky and the costs associated with creating new hardware are incredibly high."

In their place we'll start to see "a definite ‘convergence’ of other devices such as set top boxes. There’s hardly any technology difference between some hard disc video recorders and an Xbox 360 for example." In no more than 10 years, the PC will have won the battle for the hardcore gamers, interested in graphics and powerful AI, while the new gaming consoles will attract users than need accessibility and fun in short bursts.
So basically, they foresee an all-in-one device.

Sorry its in this months Maximum PC...

And the actual number is 8.3 billion for 2007 for the world and 2.76 billion in the USA alone.

I am mistaken on one point though, those numbers do include Steam and DD as a source. If my numbers are correct, PC gaming still accounts for about 25-30 percent of the gaming revenue from last year. Thats a hell of a feat considering there are about 7-9 platforms including hand-helds out there.

The forecast is already a 16 percent increase for this year alone due to high profile titles such as Conan, Far Cry 2, and Spore.

Well those numbers encompass all forms of PC gaming just as the numbers for X360 or PS3 encompass all forms of its sales too. In short, PC gaming is only going through its 2 year "slump" it always has done every time a new console generation comes out.

It has done this since the days of the 64/PS.
