Yet another 'Which RAM should I buy' question

Ok, I've finally decided I want 4GBs of RAM, since prices aren't going to get any cheaper and Vista is just going to keep wanting more. I also don't want to just throw two more 1GB sticks in there, but instead get a whole new kit of 2x2GBs.

I've narrowed it down to this GeIL kit and this Crucial kit. The GeIL one is cheaper right off the bat and gets even cheaper after the MIR. But I've also heard really good things about the Crucial Ballistix line and wouldn't really mind dropping the extra $30 for quality RAM. Both kits have exactly the same specs, so it's really just a matter of preference.

My system specs are listed in my sig and I don't really plan to overclock the RAM (running my E6750 at 3.2GHz means I just bump the FSB up to 400Mhz which lines up nicely with DDR2 800).

So which one should I get? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Neither.

G.Skill DDR2 1000

That would be my pick.

Given you have an Intel rig, I'd pick bandwidth over timings. Also, gives you more overclocking headroom

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

What do you mean by 'given that I have an Intel rig'? Does that really affect the bandwidth vs. the timing? The reason I picked the kits in the opening post is because they ran at 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2 800.

yeap. That does indeed affect issues. AMD CPUs thrive on tighter timings, while Intel CPUs eat bandwidth RAW, as long as the timings don't to too crazy (say, CAS7).

And also, you'll need to loosen the timings of that CAS4 DDR2 800 RAM anyways when you overclock it. Might as well get RAM that's already specified to run at DDR2 1000, CAS5

Ah well, that's the thing. I don't plan on going past 3.2GHz on my processor and I'd like to keep the DRAM:FSB ratio at 1:1. Since my processor speed is 400x8, then that means I only need to run DDR2 800 RAM at the stock settings. If I got the G.Skill kit, wouldn't I have to underclock it slightly to get it to run at a 1:1 ratio with my FSB?

Why underclock? Just run 4:5 in favor of the RAM.... the faster, the better. Again, Intel LOVES bandwidth. And why keep that poor E6750 so limited... that CPU has MUCH more potential than a mere 3.2GHz. 3.6GHz should be easy.
