But his use of a computer does not require 4 cores. Read the requirements in the first post.

The people that vote Q6600 seem to be the 'future-proofing' crowd, and those that vote E8400 are the 'future-proofing is pointless when you think about it' crowd.

For YOUR purposes, the dual is better, BUT something about knowing you got the extra 2 is just shweet. So I vote quad, even though I am going against what you need.

Sorry. I don't want to be rude or anything, but I did read what he said in his first post. If he's gaming and burning the E8400 should be enough. But the Q6600 will give more capability for running more progs if needed, and he's already Oced to 3GHz. Between the two there's no comparison IMO. The quad is the more capable chip, and I think it's best to be honest about it.

Do me a favor and look at the 2nd and 3rd slot... they are running e8400s and they don't seem to have any problem keeping up with someone with a quad and Crysis is supposed to be optimized for a quad...

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/3034...ts-thread.html

I'm going to go grab an e8500 and get a faster quad later.

that link is of the gcard benchie not the cpu benchie .

but anyway, after thinking about it at work today i think i might just go with e8400. whats the multi on the 8500 and what are people getting for 24/7 overclocks?

heres the cheapest 8500 i could find:

edit: the multi is 9.5

True, but the top few are running the same GPU... So you might as well start comparing the CPUs after that. This is more of a real life bench if you ask me. It shows me that both the quad and duo can handle high FPS as long as you got the GPU to back it up. So if you're gaming I would go with the e8400.

01.) 74.55 fps -- fuzzynutz -- q6600 @ 3.8 -- 9800GX2 (2 GPUs), 702/1782/1053 -- Vista 64
02.) 74.21 fps -- {core2duo}werd -- e8400 @ 4.0 -- 9800GX2 (2 GPUs) -- Vista 64

All the same cept the processor... and speed. Because the game is optimized for quad I can see the quad giving better FPS per mhz, but... it's way easier to overclock the e8400 to 4.0+ than it is to get the q6600 over 3.6. IMO of course ;P

This thread contains a lot of Wolfdale overclocks, with lots of information.

I think what makes most sense is to wait until we have native quad core(the next socket) to go quad, dual is fine for now unless you're encoding and need that extra little bit of speed

as most people here have said

e8400 is the wy to go for your exact purposes.

the q6600 really isnt THAT POWERFUL as a quad core

i my self will wait till DDR3 has met its prime before i move to any quad core processors
maybe the Nahelem or what suceeds that =)

personally im hopeing to see an excellent multicore from AMD that will keep me happy =)

again, Gamer for now, go e8400, you will have more fun Overclocking it, and happily not needing crazy cooling.

im a gamer who has been painfull looking at a new e8400 build using my current Vid card
