8400 if you mainly game, and burn.

Agreed. . .

The only program I use that really taxes my E6600 is FSX. . .and it doesn't utilize the additional cores. . .two is enough, and the higher the clocks on the primary core the better. So if I buy, it's going to be an 8400. But that's me.

In two years when the next version is out that will hopefully utilize the quad cores I think I'd rather just buy a new CPU.

At this very point in time, E8400. In the (very) near future, Q6600. So I voted for the Q6600

I don't have pics to prove, but in the same system, I did the CSS source engine stress test with my x3220 (xeon q6600) at 3.6ghz and still got ~10 more fps than my E8400 at 4.2ghz. Glad I went back to quad. Of course, that is just the Source engine testing, other engines may prefer the higher clock speed compared to source liking extra cores.

I love having the capacity to run huge amounts of stuff at any given time, and not be bogged down at all. I think a dual core running at 4.2ghz is cool, but I would rather have the very generous overhead that the Q6600 has. Like others have said, you wont notice a lot of difference between the quad at 3.6 and a dual at 4.2 in games. If you like to game and have stuff running in the background, a quad might be a better choice. I voted Q6600, because it can do lots of stuff at once, and only costs about $200.

So... I just swaped out my q6600 for an e8400 overclocked it really quick to 3.8 and then ran my Crysis benchmark... It was from 48.50 to 66.1fps and mind you the 66.7 is with no video card overclock or ending processes in windows before starting.... So needless to say I'm extremely happy with the jump.

Here's a screenshot. You can find my q6600 results at the Crysis benchmark results.
Attachment 69892

Edit: Took it to 4ghz and clocked the gpus a bit. New results.
Attachment 69894

What I found interesting is that the 2nd core wasn't even maxed out. I took this right after the test was over.
