I'd prefer using aimersoft dvd ripper, my friends recommend it to me, it's not free, but I think it well worth the money, here is a step by step guide about it
here's my (freeware) technique:
1. rip DVD with DVD Decrypter
(there's a newer version, but i prefer a simpler interface)
2. verify .vob files came out correctly with GOM
3. convert to whatever media file i could ever desire withSUPER
i've done about a dozen DVDs to throw on my iPod, only had 1 of them give me a read error and for that i recovered most of the .vob with Unstoppable Copier
i tried Handbrake...couldn't get it to work. first i had to throttle it's CPU usage because it would give me warnings about not getting to hog all my processing power. then no matter what settings i tried it would give me an error message with a tiny output file. it's open source so whatever...good luck with it.
