Got all my parts, just a few concerns.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, i finally purchased all the parts for my new build! I just recieved my 8800gt from d3daim today! Im just waiting on my hdd and my asus lightscribe dvd drive. They should be here tomorrow. After that all i need is a copy of vista and im ready!

Here's what i ended up with:

- Asus m2n sli-deluxe
- AM2 6000+ @ 3.0ghz
- 2 x 2gb OCZ RAM
- 8800gt 512mb Alpha dog edition
- Samsung 160gb sata II hdd.
- Hiper modular 580w psu
- Raidmax smilodon case

My main concern is with the cpu heatsink.
First of all im going to want to upgrade its cooling in the near future.
I want to know if i can easily change. And also do i need thermal paste when
using a stock amd hs/ fan?

That's all for now. WHen i finally get my other parts tomorrow im bound to have more questions. Anyway, thanks guys

Yes you need to use Thermal Paste even with a Stock Fan. Changing coolers is easy no problem.

The stock heatsinks come with the thermal paste already applied. I would recommend removing it with alcohol and using some decent stuff.

To change it, you will most likely have to pull the motherboard. There is a fix for this. If you cut a square out of the motherboard's mounting tray in the case behind the CPU socket, you should be able to change out heatsinks without removing the board.

Thanks for the info there guys. Im just gonna stick with the stock thermal paste for the moment (its a grayish colour yes?) as i'll only be using it for maybe a week like that. Then when i get my tunig or whatever i decide to buy, then i'll put on some good stuff . Thanks guys +rep

Come across something else now. This is a bit embarasing so sorry guys. I've never owned a pci-e card. Im putting it into the top slot and im wondering what that littlw tab does that's on the end. Im assuming it somehow locks it into place, but im unsure how it does it exactly. Oh and while im on about graphics cards, thanks to d3daim for selling me this one

oh and i applied the stock hs and i cant pull the lever all the way down, only about half way before it wont budge. Have i applied it wrong or do i need to use more force?

Thanks again guys

The PCI-E tab is in fact a locking mechanism. Simply stops the card slipping out over time for those that transport their systems around a lot. Which is needed with heavy cards.

The downside of this lock is that you have to pull it outwards when taking out a card, your probably thinking so?......Try it with SLI 9800GX2's, you need tiny tiny fingers to get at it.

Regards to the lever, it usually needs a slight bit of force.

Oh that makes sense now Thanks very much for the help mate. I've been using a fair bit of force with this lever, but im not too concerned about it at the moment, it seems to be on tight, and i'll be changing the cooler soon anyway. Just purchased an Aerocool Gatewatch II . Still waiting on my hdd and dvd drive. Then need vista and im ready to go!
