lol@the people saying this is because of gas. While it is true that almost everywhere is tacking on fuel surcharges this is not the primary cause of the price climb in this scenerio. Clearly this is the result of supply/demand market forces and as has been pointed out the prices will go up to the point when demand will drop, supply will rise and prices will fall. This could also be a result of these member companies recouping lost investment money from marketing(bribing) as well as R&D. Economic forces are very complex and at times unpredictable but rest assured that before long Blu-Ray players and discs will be affordable and main stream.

Price of gas definitely has an effect look at what you are paying for groceries now. With the current war the United States is in the U.S. Dollar is sinking like ship therefore also causing things to be more expensive including your precious blueray & barrels of oil.

Oil is more expensive because of gas?

I didn't look at the OP article but does it adjust for inflation? Because as the dollar's value has dropped, goods from across the pond get more expensive.

Tired of seeing the Blu-Ray and PS3 fanboys post article after article about how awesome each are, I had to post this. Plus, I seem to recall people saying previous reports of price increases were false, and this evidence seems to show otherwise so I want those fanboys in particular to eat their words. There is no reason for price increases unless the companies want to get greedy.
Why? I'm pretty sure based off this comment that if Nvidia came out with something (seeing as you own nvidia cards) or HD won the "war" that you'd be posting the same thing regarding how "awesome" HD was. Don't be mad because your format lost the war... Blu-Ray is superior in every way to HD. I'm not a PS3 fanboy but I can't deny the fact that the PS3 and Blu-Ray are superior technologies.

No, the OP didn't adjust for inflation because he didn't do any research himself, he found an article on THG that only looked at priegrabber.com as the end all guide for BR prices. The problem with THG's research method is that some of the companies listed on pricegrabber.com jack up the rates as is, Crutchfield.com being the highest on every search where they had a player. So technically what THG found was an "average", but it is horribly skewed due to the companies listed by pricegrabber.com. When I looked at pricegrabber.com viewing the models that THG searched, there were a handful of companies that sold it below MSRP, some sold it right at MSRP and there were more that sold it above MSRP, which is why the article reads the way it does. If they would have looked at more sources though, they wouldn't have written that article.

Well I'm not buying ANYTHING until the price of a 5.25" BR burner is less than $150.

Not to mention you specifically typed in there, "so I want those fanboys to eat their words", which obviously makes you a fanboy of either your computer and/or your 360, which in my opinion makes you just as bad as them. Ignorance is bliss I guess, enjoy it while you can.

Second of all, there can be numerous reasons for price increases and it has nothing to do with greed. Market factors play a huge role in what we get charged at the end of the day, including but not limited to; manufacturing, shipping, tariffs/taxes, markups for profits from individual stores, etc. The big item to pay attention to here is shipping. Guess who the bill is going to be passed to if the cost to ship items go up, I'll even give you a hint, its not the companies making the item and it damn sure isn't the companies that ship the product nor the companies that sell the product.

Third of all, for every one article found of prices rising, a different article of prices not rising can be found as well. So basically what you did was allow your fanboyism of whatever it is your in love with, or just your total hatred of Sony and their PS3, get the best of you and post this FUD in the news section even though it isn't worth the HTML it is on.
Touched a nerve did he? Some of us like to know that the prices are climbing, however I wouldn't be so quick to call it greed.........it's simple macroeconomics. Price is the variable in the ever changing equation of supply versus demand. It will ALWAYS be adjusted to reach equilibrium. If the production isn't able to meet demand, then they increase the price so that more money is made per unit, and less people buy the product. There will still be people willing to pay the amount, and this maximizes profits for the available units.
Welcome to capitalism.

Erm.......gas prices jump because of oil.....it's a by product of petroleum refinement..........however you're right though, gas prices affect all aspects of the economy, as EVERYTHING we buy is either made by equipment running on gas, shipped using vehicles that run on gas, etc.
