Is this PSU big enough to test with

Thread Starter
Ok so I bought a new system and already RMA the motherboard but there is stil the possibility that the issue is the PSU. So the only other supply I have is a 410watt thats in the pc I am typing on now. Is this big enough to test out a evga 790i Motherboard, 1 hard drive, 2 evga 8800 GTS G92 cards in SLI format, CPU fan and I think thats it. No optical drives and hell even going down to 1 ram sick to reduce power needed. I think this MIGHT be JUST enough but want to make sure as all I need to do is damage anything.

No it won't.

What matters for the GPU's is also Amps on the 12 volt rail. If your PSU is 410 watts, then it probably won't come any where near giving ONE of those cards enough juice. Also, I think for one card it is recommended to use a 450 or 500 watt PSU.

You will definitely need a bigger PSU.

Haha. Definitely not. You're going to want a more powerful PSU for that setup.

ya thats what I was figuring hence I was in no rush to pull this box apart to test it out. I think I could get away with 1 card just for a post test even, but not 2. No gaming hell maybe boot windows at most. But even that would be pushing it. the GTS card only uses 1 6 pin plugin so its not a huge amount of power compared to GTX at least lol.

But the stock PSU for my new system is a 1000watt, which is overboard for what I need, but o well guess I will see when the motherboard gets here. Wanted to make that clear as seams people think that I wanted to run everything off the 410 in general not just test the system out.

Much bigger PSU, probably at LEAST a reputable 600W

I dunno, if you had like Power PC&C 410W, a single core cpu, didn't overclock anything, and placed the PSU outside the case in a really cool room ... you MIGHT get that rig to fire up in SLI. I doubt you could run 3dMark or anything like that, but it would probably boot to windows in that scenario...

well note the issue with the old board lied with it flashing on for 1/2 a seocnd then that was it. With SLI it happened 90% of the time but once it got to post the system ran no issues. So in all honesty all I need to do is get the thing to post. This is all assuming the Board due to arrive Friday will have the same issue. I think its board related so do EVGA techs, but there is still possibility that its PSU. Note If I jsut remove the SLI bar but leave both GTS cards in place then the thing dose it 5-10% of the time. All I do is remove sli bar, SLI BAR on startup can't pull that much power. But then removing 1 card running on 1 card only even trying both rails and even swapping between graphics cards same issue. So my assumption is that its board related but never rule out the PSU, so we will see friday if I need to attempt this.

If it's aname brand PSU with more than 20A on the +12v line it will be plenty sufficent to get into windows and do non gaming tasks.

That setup, at idle, is probably in the area of 100-150w total.

Can you run the system barebones (just CPU, mobo, RAM, one HDD, and one GPU)? Running just one graphics card will significantly reduce the power requirements of the machine.
