fsb vs ratio ??

Thread Starter
been reading around the board and trying to get my head around memory ratios. i read alot that 1:1 ratio is what to go for, so the cpu and memory are at the most stable.

1) in the bios i have changed, memory clock mode to 'linked', with fsb memory ratio to 'sync mode', my fsb (qdr) is 1424 (3.2g), and this is giving me an actual memory speed of 712mhz. cpu-z is reading a ratio of 1:1, dram frequency of 350mhz, timings 4.4.4.12.

2) if i change these settings (bios) to unlinked, same fsb qdr, and manually set the memory to 800, same timings. cpuz reads a ratio of 8:9 dram frequency of 400mhz

i done a little memory benchmark on everest:
with settings 1 - memory read 7571, memory write 6368
with settings 2 - memory read 8683, memory write 6232

am just wondering which is the better setting to go for. Also, with setting 1, is there a way to increase the memory speed, as this is greyed out. Setting 2, i can manually change (or overclock) the memory speed but the ratio increase's, would this be a good thing and will it effect stablilty/performance

sorry about all the questions

I would bump it up to 900Mhz or maybe even 1000 with dominators and keep it unlinked.

Well we need to know what multiplier your ram is at.... definately leave it UNLINKED.... there is nothing wrong with 712 with tighter timings. make sure that your ram multiplier is set to 2. when it is you will be running your DDR2800 ram at 712 with a 1:1 ratio.

For example... @333x2 Multi

how do i know what my ram multiplier is: bios reads actual memory (linked) as 712mhz, cpuz reads 356mhz (x2 = 712mhz) - is this right.

N1 avacado

so, i'll keep the memory clock mode to 'Unlinked' in the bios.

Can you please confirm, that if i leave the mem clock mode as unlinked, i could therefore overclock the ram manually. As kingsnake2 mentioned take the ram to 900mhz?

Regarding mem ratio's:
When i set the the memory speed to 801mhz (bios), (i have to set it to 801 cos if i set the memory speed to 800 it reads 792?) - cpuz reads the ratio of fsb:ddr as 8:9 - and if i take to mem speed higher to 822, cpuz reads the ratio as 13:15.

This is were am also stumped, ratios - is a high ratio bad?

Provided your RAM is running at least as fast, or faster, than the CPU bus then there is nothing to be concerned about. All ratio's are used for is to show mathematically how your CPU's bus speed compares to your RAM.

^ What he said.

But not it's ok if you set it to 800 and it's read at 792, I would prefer that for the 1:1 ratio.
