I can step-up to the 9800GX2 for $240....should I do it? - Page 3

Yeah do it man. I have two 8800GTS 512's and the GX2 is pretty much two of em slapped together. Think of the price of buying another card...it just makes sense to go GX2 if you don't already have SLI going on. Then you can buy another GX2 later if you want and go QUAD SLI.

I'm either going to buy another 8800GTS G92 later once the price goes way down and I'm able to buy a SLI motherboard or I'm going to buy the 9800GX2 and not worry about buying another 8800GTS G92. I'm so unsure of what to do because I just want a computer that will last for a very long time just like my current rig has lasted 2 and a half year for me.

I will try to be nice in my response to this...

Get a Q6600 instead of a Q9450 (I did, and I'm amazed)
EVGA 780i will treat you fine, no need for the 790i, unless you MUST have the latest greatest.
DDR3 is a waste. Don't bother with it yet.

Upgrade your CPU/MOBO first
Q6600 SLACR $240$ (~200$ at Fry's Electronics in store)
EVGA 780i 242$

Assuming you really need quadcore (I don't need it, but I love it nonetheless).

I'm sure theres better deals out there, but throw some pc2-8500 crucial ballistix in the mix and you will have the same performance as the setup you are wanting for half the price.

How far would the Q6600 overclock with the 780i vs. the 790i?

its probally ur ram and cpu mostly ur ram bottle necking. but if u got a 9800gx2 u would have even more problems w/bottlenecking.

I can't recommend throwing a 9800GX2 in that rig, but I took the time to read all the comments and apparently you've realized this is not a good option.

The best upgrade I think you could make right at this moment would be something along the lines of what Clinic recommended. Q6600/E6750, DDR2, 780i and another GTS.

However, if that system can hold you over a bit longer, I would honestly wait. I upgraded to my rig in January, but I was running a substantially slower machine than yours. If I had your exact rig right now, I would wait for Nehalem. Maybe grab another HDD and RAID em if you're really itching to spend money.

okay so are you going to be building a WHOLE new system this summer regardless if you purchase the gx2 now? I'm confused. And when you do will you be getting a new GFX card anyway?

That's just it....I'm not really wanting to spend money but that's kind of a must when upgrading to something better plus I have been playing the waiting game for 2 years now and I haven't found the right time to upgrade to something better. It's a hard thing to know when to buy and when not to buy especially when computer parts are being upgraded every 6 months.

Yes I'm building a new computer and I'm going to use my current computer with my old 550 watt power supply and my old X1900xt graphics card. I'm just trying to spread out how much I buy at one time.

Interesting. Im getting 14k.
I guess with drr2 ram and better chipset and better cpu I could pull this score off. Im glad Im on 939 anymore.
