looking for some suggestions-tia

Thread Starter
i was able to get a q6700 g0 from clubit yesterday for 299. i do plan on overclocking, now i have a couple of questions

1) any suggestions on mb's? im looking to keep the price under $300
2) i got the EVGA 768 GeForce 8800GTX 768MB video card from newegg for $290 with mib. should i have gone for a pcixpress 2.0 video card instead? i really don't want to spend over $400 for a video card.
3) ddr3 ram worth it or no? from what i've been reading it doesn't seem like it.
4) will 550w power supply be enough if i am running only one video card.
5) is liquid cooling a must?

thanks in advance.

to adress your queries, in order:

1) depends on what you want to do. do you want to run sli or have the possibility to in the future? then a evga or xfx 780i mobo is whats best. if you don't want sli, then get a p35 board, the gigabyte ds3l being my long standing recommendation. if you want, you could purchase a thermalright heatsink cooler in order to cool the chipset better. it will cost the same as the fancier p35 boards, and the thermalright cooler will be a lot more effective that the copper lumps of crap board makers seem to be in love with nowadays.

2) thats a great pickup, pci-e 2.0 is not going to be a factor until at least the next gen cards arrive, possibly not even then. only plus is pci-e 2.0 supports more power. the 8800gtx for that price is a very good deal.

3) ddr3 ram is not worth it yet, but its getting there. maybe in a few months... don't get one of those silly combo boards though, just stick with ddr2, its not how fast your ram is, its how much of it you have.

4) depends on what brand. a corsair 520hx would be perfect for your system.

5) a must for what? a good air cooler will do you plenty, unless you want to run at 4ghz or something... its cool, but expensive and requires maintenance.

thanks for the repsonse cky2k6. i probably will go with the evga 780i. if i decide go with two video cards how big of a power supply do you recommend? i haven't opened my antec truepower trio 550w. im assuming that's not even close to enough.

ok i just found slizone and it shows certified power supplys for sli setups. looks like i'll need about 800+

hey imone03, newegg has a nice little tool on their website, called a wattage calculator. it will give you a rough estimate on how much power your going to need. here it is.http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

ok sorry to keep this thread going but i just want to make sure i do this right the first time. using the newegg power supply calculator, for a system w/ quad core proc, 2x8800gtx cards, 2x2gb of ddr2 ram, 2xdvd drives, and 2xhard drives it recommends 938w psu. that's not including extra fans or my external hard drives. does this mean i need to get about 1200w?

no, thats a gross overestimation.. I have the same system as you, minus the 8800gtx cards, and I run fine on a 750w psu. you don't need anything more than 850w.

I am using the PC Power & Cooling 610W with 3hd's, 4x1gig, 2 dvd drives, 3x120mm fans a tt 120 and a hd2900xt. The video card alone pulls 215w. And it runs like a charm.
So if you for planning to use two 8800dtx in sli. You be ok with a 750w.
