^^I agree with reberto. I have both an HT Omega Claro and an X-Fi, have had them in the sig rig at separate times.

My ears say any card with a CMI8788 trumps an X-Fi any day in terms of just sound quality.

Man, I'm still torn. Thanks for all the input guys. I want the sound quality of the Claro, but what I'm reading about how it uses the CPU much more than an X-fi card is troubling. Since I am getting this primarily for gaming, and I don't have a 7.1 system on my receiver for movies anyway, I am strongly leaning toward the Prelude right now.

Reps all around!

One last question popped up. If I am not going to be using a 5.1/7.1 setup (at least, not for a while), and I'm mainly getting this card to power ATH-A900 headphones (I'm still not comfortable using the term "cans" quite yet), is an X-Fi card really worth it over a CMI8788 card? I hear X-Fi is much better for gaming, but CMI8788 has better sound quality. Is X-Fi still that much better for gaming if I'm running headphones?

Z-5500 != Quality headphones, much less one of the best un-amped headphones like the ATH-A900

If you're so concerned about the sound card using CPU cycles, I'd say don't worry about it. You've got a killer rig; it's got so much horsepower, whatever the sound card might need is so small a percentage your system won't even notice (and neither would you).

Questions about sound card output quality is all about whoever is doing the listening, so it's impossible to get a straight answer. That's the nature of a subjective question: You get subjective answers.

The X-Fi's only "advantage," EAX effects, depends on the games you play more than anything else. If the game isn't coded to take advantage of the latest EAX effects, then you won't know the difference between EAX 5.0 and 2.0.

If you can, try to arrange for a listening comparison for yourself between an X-Fi card and a CMI8788, using your headphones (with friends). This is really the only way to know for sure; otherwise, you'll always have people telling you one thing or the other.

Thx txtmstrjoe, that post was helpful. One follow up...

Say I do play games that take full advantage of EAX 5.0. Are the differences between EAX 5.0 and 2.0 as pronounced with good headphones as they are on a quality 5.1/7.1 system?

Wish I could answer this definitively. I don't have a quality 5.1 system (much less a 7.1), but I do have an Audio Technica ATH-A700 set. I must admit that, on a game that takes full advantage of EAX 5.0, there will be a noticeable difference; you'll hear more sounds, and the positional audio will be better. Mind you, this is all based on a system running XP SP2; from my understanding, any EAX 5.0 advantages are nullified on Vista of any flavor(someone confirm this, please). I've not run Vista, so I cannot comment via experience.

Hope someone far more knowledgable helps you out more.
