Cannot force AA - Almost every game - What's the deal, nVidia?

Thread Starter
I'm on the current WHQL Release drivers, 169.21. It seems as if any game - old or new, I cannot force AA. For instance, I have an older game I still like to play, Silent Hunter III. It came with no AA included in its options. Back on my old PC when I was on my Radeon x850XT, I was able to force AA with no problems at all, the game looked beautiful for its age. Now with my 8800GT, I am unable to force AA, and the game looks like complete crap, which I find ironic, since I'm now on a new, pretty much up-to-date machine, with a roughly $300 GPU in it, and yet the old x850 puts it to shame. This is ridiculous.

Part of it is the game's fault in it looking crappy. I'm playing on a 22" widescreen monitor now, and the game (still using Silent Hunter III as my example) won't let you change your resolution, let alone support widescreen. But none the less, the biggest part of it looking like junk is the fact I'm unable to force AA. This isn't the only game either, I've experienced it in numerous of other titles. Oblivion being one, sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't, and even when it did, it would usually end up in my game being screwed resulting in a reinstall.

I must assume there are many others here experiencing issues like I brought up. I know there are probably billions of threads on this already, but this is my own experiences with it.

All things aside... Is anyone having any better luck with the new beta drivers? I've been tempted to try them, but then again, they are beta.

If you got a fix or anything that will help in forcing AA, please let me know. If only all games came with AA built in, we wouldn't have to worry about this crap...

I suppose I'm considering just using my old rig to play that game. There seems to be no other solution at the moment.

Well, I gave in and tried the new beta drivers. WOW. They are great so far. I tried them in Call of Duty 4. They boosted the G92 performance A LOT. I now have settings all maxed in Call of Duty 4, and even have Supersampling enabled in the control panel, and it flies, 80-90+ FPS almost constant. Reaches well over 100 FPS frequently. Bravo, nVidia. I wasn't able to try Silent Hunter III though for forcing AA, as the game wouldn't even load after the new drivers were put in... but we'll see what a reinstall will do.

I've noticed that aa or af forced don't work for me in Vista but do work in XP with 169.25.

How is that you are certain that AA isn't working?

Not saying you don't know it, I'm just wondering how you know for sure?

One thing I've sure noticed in my gaming daze is that playing at anything apart from your monitors native resolution looks like cr@p, and the further you get away from native, the worse it looks. Especially when you can't even use the proper aspect ratio. Maybe the game looks so bad because of it that you can't even tell the effects of AA.

Or maybe I'm talking out my @ss. Wouldn't be the first time.
