.. When I overclock my card too far, it can start artifacting so bad that the screen looks almost like a channel that is partially blocked on the tv. It happens when its just on the verge of crashing completely. Im sure if you could overclock it to that point, so there is artifacting all over the screen, and you showed your rents, they would agree that the card needed replacing. No foul play, you still have a working card, but it will look like it needs to be replaced. Takes very little work, and you might even give away the old card to some lucky person on OCN after its been replaced.
