How long should I run a Small FFT test to determine stability?

When it comes to stability tests, the longer your rig can run on it, the closer to actual stability it is.

Or, as some people might believe, longer is better...

Im happy with 6 to 8 hrs but I also like to include about an hour or two of memtest to make sure the ram is good.

Ive had failures of orthos and such up to the 36 hour point. I think even a stock cpu could come up with a failure eventually.

I believe this as well.

The only perfectly stable state a PC can be in is when it is turned off, methinks.

and thats the thing right there.

Sometimes you can fold, game, encode all day long at 3.9ghz but a stability test will fail after 6+ hours.

To me that overclock is already stable enough.

I usually go with 6 hours since it seems to be what's needed to get your name in the books here on OCN with a stable rig. OCCT however seems to show errors quicker than Orthos but Orthos heats things up quicker.

Weird.

I'll run MemTest as well to 100% and if both check out ok I consider it stable. I don't fold so my rig won't subjected to loads even close to what Orthos/OCCT can do.
