3870X2 - only one core working? - Page 2

Umm, going over to XS I found THIS and just thought this might be what's going on.

Yeah I would do a reformat long before I would go through that craptastic rma process! OMG Nvidia partners are so much better than ATI ones. ATI are you listening? Obtain better partners! 15 to 50 dollars for a customer to pay for an already faulty card on your behalf is hogwash!

Very true, but my experience with ATi Radeon, no reseller like Sapphire, cost 8 bucks to ship and got it within a couple days, only had to pay one way shipping. No updates on the RMA, you'll just receive it one day lol

ok lots of weird **** happening.

so i re-formatted and re-installed bla bla bla.. only one core was showing in device manager.

i then turned off the computer and left it, got home after a big night and decided to surf the net. when i turned it on, i had a little pop-up message in the corner of the screen say the HD3870X2 was deteced? i went into device manager and wah-lah, there was now 2 x 3870X2's showing.

after a restart though, my PC proceeded to boot into windows, not detecting any display adapter, like the drivers were not installed. my comp hasnt been overclocked at this stage by the way.

so i was like WT(F) man, re-installed drivers, restarted and only one core working again.

time to call Sapphire/ATI support?

I had the same problem... First off check to see if the one core is using resources, if it isn't try these two things together: go to sapphire and get the newest driver and reinstall 8.3 from ATI, if these two don't work then RMA the card as you have a bad core. However, I had the same issue, it would only recognize one of the two cores, except for me it would recognize three cores and not the fourth (as i have two HD3870x2's) so the following fix worked for me. I'm assuming you are using the 790FX chipset, if not this still applies. Flash the BIOS with chipset updates because some of the chipsets were playing hell on these cards so that would be a smart move. Hope it helps!

hehe, lil confusing.

ok so first, how do i check that the one core is using resources?

the 790FX chipset, is that reference to the GPU board chipset? sorry never heard of it. ok so where would i go to get a new bios for the card?

my biggest issue is, this card WAS working fine, all was well. just recently this happened..funnily enough i noticed it after installing Service Pack 1, however after a fresh install and without the Service Pack, problem still remains.

DO NOT RMA

I thought there was something wrong with mine as well... I called ATI today to see what the hell was going on... Cause I know my cards work just fine in single on my other system. ATI said new drivers are going to be released next week... Asked him what day and he said Wednesday. 4/16/08 he said it fixes the One GPU problem.
