High Temps, Can't Figure It Out, Blah, Blah, Blah

I always try to find the answer myself.

I'll do searches, read reviews, check forums...everything I can to try and figure things out myself but this has me stumped.

You can compare what I'm about to say to others with similar VID but with less cooling in the Stable E1000/E2000 Rig Configuration Thread.

My setup
E2180 (M0) @ 3Ghz (300x10)
Heatsink: OCZ Tempest & Asus V60 (w/Tempest fan @ 2,500RPM for 44CFM)
92mm fan at 2,000RPM intake (front bottom)
92mm fan at 2,000RPM intake (front top - drive bay)
80mm fan at unkown RPM intake (side window)
92mm fan at 2,000RPM exhaust (back)
120mm fan in PSU exhaust
vcore 1.418 (shows as 1.44 in CPU-Z)
Ambient room temperature of approx. 27 degrees
Idle: core 1 = 40/core 2 = 42
Full load: core 1 = 70/core 2 = 70

Now those coolers aren't exactly the king of the hill but obviously those temperatures are far too high but I don't know what's going on. As I was telling linskingdom via PM I could understand if one of the heatsinks wasn't seated properly or if I botched the TIM application on one of them but it isn't very likely.

At this point I'm thinking it may have been a bad manufacturing job when mating the IHS to the cores. I'm out of luck if that's the case because it was an OEM processor and to my knowledge there are no exchanges on OEM processors from Tiger Direct.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

***EDIT***
And no, removing the IHS is not an option.

Did you try lowering the V-core? It's at 1.4 V.
If you tried that, I recommend a better cooler.

you're running slightly hotter than my e6700 did at 1.35v. I would suggest either decreasing the voltage or getting a better cooler, that cooler was designed around the time of the Pentium D's:

I don't know anything about your case. But I have the same problem as you. I've reseated my heat sink about 10 times following numerous tutorials. I've only dropped my temps to 64* on load. Currently, I'm running at 3.0mhz @ 1.26v and that's my load temps. Some cases just don't breathe. I'm gonna go watercooled in a bit. It seems to be my only option left. Once I do that I'll be cranking out some serious numbers.

Trust me, I'd love to drop the voltage if I could but any less and it won't run stable at 3Ghz. Maybe I'm doomed to run at 2.8 or even less.

Thanks for the link mica. I saw that thread already but it doesn't seem to offer any insight.

I have 4 case fans and nothing seems to be making a difference and before just chalked it up to my Tempest being under powered. Now with the Asus V60 (using the faster fan from the Tempest) is shown holding it's own against coolers that are superior to the Tempest. It's from a Russian website and while I can't read Russian and I can read the graphs.

The V60 got positive reviews on Newegg.com but you know how trustworthy those are sometimes. One guy said the cooler is helping to run at 9 degrees while another says it dropped their temperature from 90 to 30. Riiiight.

Anyway, I'm still anxious to see what others have to say. I'm going to toy around with it again but I think I have to back off of it as well as my memory. That northbridge cooler is about 10 degrees away from being able to burn I think.

Ouch! The southbridge is f'ing hot too!

*sigh*

Maybe I'm not meant to have 3Ghz.

When did you buy your E2180 there Perry? I'm having a similar issue, although I can reach 3.0ghz on stock voltages. Merely dropping my multiplier to 9 and increasing FSB to 333!

With stock voltages, I'm idling at 32ºC with ambient temps around the same as yours. Loading around 52ºC!

If I increase Vcore at all, my temps skyrocket, for example: 1.325v in Bios gives me 63-64ºC under 100% load! Any more than that, it goes to 70ºC and up!!!

I've decided to stay at 3ghz because of the heat issues, at least until I can do something else!

I picked it up from Tiger Direct about 3 or 4 weeks ago when they were having the sale on them for $59.99 after $20 MIR.

Oddly enough I was thinking about playing with the multiplier at work today actually and am about to give it a shot now.

Results to follow.

The newer E2180's haven't been doing so well, in the OC category, although you may have gotten one that was an older batch. I purchased mine back in Oct 2007, and I've heard and read alot concerning the newer chips not being able to OC as well. Good luck and keep us posted as to your results

My idle temps right now at well above yours but I would imagine that this is because your VID is 1.225 and mine is 1.325 but that doesn't mean much since there are people with the same VID as me hitting full load at 3Ghz at 60 degrees.

I'll have to keep trying.

My first attempt with 333FSB didn't work so well.

Well the 650i chipset wasn't designed to run 333FSB at stock so you might need to continue increasing NB voltages, within reason of course
