9800GX2 + Maximus + Multiple Displays + Vista

Thread Starter
I want to use multiple displays with my GX2. I know that in order to use the onboard SLI capabilities of the card, I would have to buy a second video card.

My question, therefore is:

Can I run two Nvidia display adapters (9800GX2 and 8800GTS-320) on my Maximus in Vista?

The Nvidia FAQ states:
Quote:
An additional graphics card is required to drive a secondary monitor when SLI is enabled under Windows XP. Windows Vista's new driver model does not allow additional graphics cards to be used with SLI to enable multi-display.
But I'm pretty sure I've seen other Vista users with multiple displays AND SLI...

REP+ for the absolutely right answer!

I'm fairly sure you can use both those cards. Try it and find out, you have nothing to lose.

You can use multiple displays with a single GX2. Just choose Multi display in the Nvidia CP

Okay, no. I meant SLI on a single card (like the GX2).

The 9800GX2 has SLI built into the card. This doesn't mean you have two cards, but it DOES mean you can't use multiple displays on the 9800GX2 with SLI enabled.

I want to have the 9800GX2 in SLI mode AND have a second display at the same time. I understand that requires an auxiliary card to run the second display. So, my question is simple: can I run two Nvidia cards on X38/X48?

The 9800GX2 needs to run in SLI mode? Are you sure 1 card needs that? I honestly don't know.
To the other question, all I could say is try it. Get a cheap card locally, try it and then return it if it doesn't work.
If you used crossfire you could use up to 4 monitors.

I may be wrong but you can have the second video card installed and still use the SLI because it is two cards on one, however the nvidia drivers may not be that mature yet, the worse you can do is try it and have it not work. and I do believe you are right with SLI enabled on the 9600GX2 you are limited to one display because it makes it assign half the screen to each card in SLI. IMO worth a shot

Okay. Consensus = try it and see.

I've researched this a lot on my own, and I've come up with the following conclusions:

Only a UDA driver would be able to run both display adapters
Only 174.74 BETA is UDA (WHQL is not)
If UDA doesn't work, I can use a WDDM driver for the 9800GX2 and a WDM driver for the 8800GTS

In any of the above cases, I must install both cards at the same time, then disable the GTS in device manager, install the driver for the GX2 and get the GX2 to restart in non-SLI. Then, I enable SLI, restart and then enable the second card. At that time, I either point it towards the UDA driver or the WDM if that doesn't work.

Although nobody came close to helping me, REP for everyone who bothered to respond. Thanks anyway. REP to anyone else with better ideas than mine.
