RAM amount noob Q

Newbie Question

Currently running 2x1gb of Corsair Dominator 1066 with Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Looking to buy some more. Should I just get 2gb (2xgb) or could I get 4g (2x2gig) and run DIMMS of different amounts?

I plan to overclock. Would DIMMs of different amounts throw off timing, syncing, etc?

There is no disadvantage to running memory of different sizes. However, there are other concerns you must consider.

1) All 4 DIMMs must operate at the same voltage. If your first 2x1GB set is rated for 2.2v and you get a 2x2GB set rated for 1.9v, you're going to have some issues. The BIOS will run all 4 at the same voltage. 2.2v might fry the 2x2GB set, and 1.9v might cause the 2x1GB set not to post.

2) All 4 DIMMs will run at the speed of the slowest set and the timings of the loosest set. So let's say your 2x1GB set is DDR2 1066 rated for 5-5-5-15-2T at those speeds, but your 2x2GB set is DDR2 667 rated for 4-4-4-12-2T at that speed. Well your new 2x2GB set probably can't overclock to 1066 speeds even with looser timings, so all 4 DIMMs are limited in their overclock to what the weakest link can do.

These issues can be avoided by buying similar memory rated at the same voltage, just make sure you do your research.

I have a quick follow-up question.

If I overclock with Link and Sync, then install more memory (identical pieces, same voltage, amount etc) will it throw off the overclock?

Should I wait until I have all the memory I plan to get to overlock?

Now I'm trying to install 32bit Vista Ultimate with 2Gb only than update windows, install SP1 than patch .... and only than add 2 extra sticks if that works I'm gone try same thing but with Vista Ultimate 64bit.

I have my ram sync'd and it will operate at half the fsb. Since my im at 3.4 with a multi of 9 the fsb is 1525. My ram speed is then half that. It operates just under specs (800mhz ram) so I am able to set my timings lower since it is clocked lower. I would be really careful when messing with timings if you are using different ram.
Best of luck

first off, you will want 64 bit otherwise your wasting ram. You need to get the patch so that you can use 4gb. Check the microsoft website.
Update your bios. I had a similar problem when i went to 4gb and the bios update fixed it.
You might need to bump the voltage up a little if your using 4 gb.
also, next time get your own tread since this really doesnt apply to the tread it was posed on
