My First Attempt at cutting acrylic: Second Attempt Update (First Post) - Page 2

Go slow, if at all possible, leave the protective sheet over the acrylic, and even wet it down before cutting. The paper sheet keeps the area you are cutting clean, easily lets you draw lines, and the wetting helps the melting. The slower you go the less heat you will generate, thus, no melting at all.

As you have discoverd, the reinforced cutting wheels don't really work that well.

If you have some cashola, then I would recommend getting some sideways bits and the guide (lower right-hand corner):

As phillipjos stated, Jigs are a must if you want a clean edge:

Use C-Clamps to hold the straight edge in place.

Yes. That would work.

With the exception of Table-mounted tools (saw or router), a cutting action that is perpendicular to the piece being cut has more of a chance of vibrating. When the cutting action is the same as the plane, then the cut tends to be smother (sideways bit and attachment as opposed to the jigsaw attachment).

In the end the point may be moot, as either cut can readily be sanded. The only element to consider is the amount the surface will be reduced by. This applies especially to pieces that are measured and cut in order to fit together in a prescribed dimension and manner.

It is much easier to remove more surface than it is to try and put it back.

.Thanks . I am now going to get the sideways bit and guide. I will post an other update when I make my second attempt.

All this is practice and information gathering for the mod I am planning. I am going to blow my entire tax return on it. . This is what OCN and the wonderful inspirations in the case mod gallery have done to me.

I am so glad I am not alone .

I also took up an other job to support the additional expenses

The bit and guide are scheduled to arrive around 04/15. I should be able to post an update then.

I don't know if this has been said in this thread already, but if you want the edges of your cut to look fatory/clean/clear just us a mini torch. This gets rid of the uglys and makes the eges clear for the most part as if you bought the piece already prefab that way. You can get these torches at Home Depot, although I don't know how much they are. All it is, is just a little propane tank, with an atatchment on it, and you just spark up the gas and evenly torch the edges like your spray painting profesh.
