Overclocking the Yorkfield Q9450 on an MSI P7N SLi Platinum...

I'm so lost...
Hello, I'm Jacen, new around here.

This is my current setup: https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...Title=Infinyte

I'm quite satisfied with everything but my CPU speed. I've been trying for quite a while now to attempt to get the Yorkfield up to 3.2Ghz on my 750i board. I'm "pretty sure" it's possible.

But in all honesty, I'm not much of an overclocker. I know how to adjust the FSB and all that (1600 is what I'm going for.), but the problem is with the Voltages, I have NO CLUE what kind of settings I should have them at.

For that matter, I'm not sure what BIOS I should have (Currently just have 1.10.) for best results. Nor whether I need to overclock the RAM or not. If anyone can help me out to achieve my main goal here, I would be very much obliged.

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance to those who respond.

You most likely will not need to flash the bios. As for your voltages, overclock until it starts becoming unstable, then raise the voltage a little (as in like .02). You dont have to overclock the ram but you may want to run it with a 1:1 ratio with your fsb if possible. I think there is a guide in the memory section that explains ratios.

Haha, sounds like work. Just kidding, I'll do just that. I'm pretty sure the default (800Mhz) for my RAM will be 1:1 with the FSB if I can get it to 1600(400x4). But I'll doublecheck.

One thing though, how much should I pump the FSB at a time? It currently displays in my BIOS as 1333. So should I try 1350 next, then go up by ten each time? Or is that being to careful?

Also, what Voltages will I need to raise? Just the CPU or the NB and such as well?

What would really be nice is an example of a similar setup to mine...

I've gained major headway here!
Been playing around for a while, and I finally got it to boot up and get all the way into Vista at 1600 FSB (400x)

I did so by raising my CPU to 1.3 Volts, VTTFSB to 1.275, Memory at 2v, and NorthBridge is at 1.28.

I'm so close! Yet, while it lets me roam around on Vista and open applications, the applications all seem to crash within seconds of being opened. So I'm obviously not quite there yet..

Anyone know what might be causing this? Which voltages should I expect to need tweaking to get around it?

Its probably your 750 board and/or your ram divider-- post your specs in your User Cp.

not all chips are created equal though.

Specs posted!
And dang, I don't wanna hear that. xP
After all, I got it to boot. Isn't there anything I could tweak to try and stabilize it?

this worked for me ..@3600mhz:

EIST ENABLED
1800
1000(5-5-5-15) (org ram was 800 4-4-4-12)
8
+0.05
2.00
1.55
1.51
1.66
Spread Spectrum DISABLED

the voltages are pretty high and only stable, if the NB get's allot fresh air

3200Mhz where possible at the same voltages..

I can't help looking at your build and thinking what could have possible been going through your head when you spec'ed out your amazing PC then crapped out on the motherboard.

Interesting...

I would not expect to much out of your MB. At $170, your 750i board is...well, i'll keep this positive. Nvidia boards are all pretty bad atm. Based on the Anandtech.com article yesterday, the Nvidia chipset has not changed much (as far as quad core overclocking) since the 680i catastrophe.

To get the most out of your system get an X38, P35 or X48.
