Smoke !!!!

HI

So there i was trying to put my first Desktop together.

1) Put the CPU to the motherboard.
2) Hook up the fan
3) Pop the ram into DIMM 0
4) Set the board to the case
5) Hook up the power supply to the case
6) Connect the graphics card to the mobo
7) Connect the power supply to the mobo and graphics card
8) Connect the case wires to the appropriate mobo slots
9) Connect the screen and start up.

BOOM

Smoke comes out of the case. Around the area of the on of switch. What happend ?? Im sure everyting was connected correctly. And defnitly a fuse blew, but where ? Was it the power supply (opesite side of the on/off switch) or a fuse in the bo ???

plzhelp !!!!

You crossed the streams. Never cross the streams.

Srsly... sounds like if it came from behind the power button it might have been a poor solder in construction. Do you have any other PSUs to test out with? Standard debugging procedure is to keep replacing individual parts until it works again, and if time and time again the switch doesnt work, then its the switch.

Ooh...I hope nothing else got frazzled. Sounds like your PSU catastrophically failed .
In future its best to test the PSU before intsalling using the paperclip trick.
I would try borrowing a psu from someone else to see if thats the problem.

Well if i plug it all in, obviously it doesnt start.

But the lights on the mobo goes on, and the graphics card fan gives a spin.

check your RAM to see if you've placed it in the right direction...i did this once when i was tidying my sig rig and the RAM and the PSU both got burnt and it smelled like rotten plastic(RAM still works fine!!)...and i think your's is definitely a PSU problem.

If you saw smoke , then you had to have smelt electric burn, smell around for thesource
of your oder and thats is what blew out. Also you will see a browned something if it blew

Also try and see if you can open the PSU....that'll show clear signs of an electric disorder if there was one(smell, blacky burns...)

NO NO NO. Not wise unless you know what you are doing. Especially if it is faulty. A PSU does hold power and if you go about it wrong then you are going to take a VERY unpleasant hit from it...there not to be messed with. Plus you void your warranty lol.
