How to: Start-up and stop a program when windows starts.

Please remind me if this has already been explained. I only found the way through msconfig, which I found wasn't as easy as the registry editor.

1. Open Run in your start menu.

2. Type regedit and hit enter.

3. Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\C urrentVersion\\Run

4. Right click in the space and go to New and String Value.

5. Type in a name for the program you wish to open when windows starts-up.

6. Right click on the name and hit Modify.

7. Then right click on the program's launch icon and copy the target in preferences.

Boom!

To delete something from start-up, simply right click on the name and delete.

Personally I find it ALOT easier to just:

1. Go to where the programs .exe file is
2. Right click on it and choose copy.
3. Open your start menu
4. Go to All Programs>>Startup
5. Right Click on it>>Open
6. Paste the .exe in there

BOOM! It'll start up when windows starts. And if you don't want it to just delete it out of there.

If you want a program to NOT start up when windows starts do this:

1. go to start menu>>Run...
2. Type in msconfig
3. Go to startup
4. Uncheck whatever you don't want to start

BOOM! On next restart that program will have not started.

Or download CCleaner and go to Tools->Startup.

Nice guide BTW.

Yea I have CCleaner also, what a wonderful tool!
Thanks, I try to make it so there is no possible way someone can get lost in the process.

Doesn't belong in coding and programming since it has pretty much nothing to do with actual coding and programming.

Where exactly should it go? He thought it dealt with coding cause he was in the registry.
Give the man a break, all he wanted to do was ask a question and get a nice simple answer.
Not get grief about him not posting his question in the right thread. sheesh...

I know it's not the only way, just thought this one was better and it simplified it for me.

If you are trying to ADD stuff to be started on boot, then there is two ways, both easy.

One is the "startup" folder already explained. The other (much easier and more configurable) option is Task Scheduler. You can use Task Scheduler to start stuff on boot, or at a specific time(s).
