Overclocking 8800gts 640mb

Thread Starter
Well i am a overclocker in training and want to overclock my video card using rivatuner. I have overclocked the core clock of my video card by 5 for a start. My plan is to overclock the core clock by increments of 5 until i get artifacts on my screen. If i get artifacts on my screen i will lower it by 5 and then i will do the same with the memory clock. I have a stock vga cooler and a thermaltake armor case with 2 rear fans, and a front fan. Is this safe to do with the cooling system i have?

yeah...you should be fine. Most cards will become unstable from too much overclocking before you can make them overheat. I have the same card as you, and it runs like...3C hotter under load when it's overclocked. You're not raising voltage, so you won't have a ton of extra heat build up like when you're overclocking a CPU

Ok thanks man. Well right now it is at about 525/1213/792. The stock speed was at 513/1188/792. I went through two increments already. Ran the 3dmark06 and everything was fine. I went to the hardware monitoring chart and it said it was at stock speeds. I set the launcher to the overclock i wanted and it still stock. Any ideas?

Use ATI Tool. I simply don't trust RivaTuner.

Make sure when overclocking via ATI Tool you adjust the Artifact Detection Slider to the maximum in the settings. Also when running the artifact scan with each clock increase, run it for 10mins. Then raise again.

Once your happy with your desired clocks run the artifact scanner for 30mins.

Oh fair enough, personally i never use Rivatuner as it doesn't test sod all. You set a clock hit a button and that's it and you supposed to believe that. I prefer a much more strenuous testing

Ok well i overclocked on rivatuner and it seemed to work. I am using ati tool to scan for artifacts. Right now it has been 8 minutes with no errors but my video card temp is 75 degrees celcius right now. Is that a little high?

Also, is it possible to run two things in the launcher tab on rivatuner at one time? I want to run my fan speed of my video card at a higher speed i have as well as having the overclock on my video card. Is there a way to do this?

Yes, OC with Riva, check for artifacts in ATItool for 10 minutes is the best way. 75C does seem a little high for your OC, although your temps are still within manufacturer’s specs.

Yes, if you want to do it on the fly, map some keys….1 for your OC & 1 for going back to your default (I use the + and – keys for this so I can OC on the fly when playing games) and you can do the same for fan speeds, but you will need to create fan profiles and link to them before you can map keys (same goes for the OC of course). Check out the guides on the Guru forums for specifics on doing this.

As for OCing, I’ve had my 640 upto 648/1634/1015 with no artifacts @ 68C max (mind you my case is a wind tunnel though). I settled at 621/1566/1000 and get 64C max. In my opinion, you don’t need to go in increments of 5 until you get towards your max OC (and increments of 5 are not really valid due to banding...read up on this on Guru). 640s that come OCd from the manufacturer are at +/-580/1350/850 already so that was my safe starting point and I just backed down from my max a bit once I got artifacts (thus the 648/1634/1015).

I like ATITool better for the fact that you have better control over the actual numbers you're overclocking to, meaning instead of using just a slider, you can type in the number or go up by one or two, five, etc. With Rivatuner, you're stuck with wherever the slider wants to go. However, you can usually get a better overall max core clock because you can adjust the shaders independently in Rivatuner. I was able to get a higher max core overclock taking this approach, but it actually showed up worse in 3DMark06 after turning the shaders down and the core up. So I switched back, and it worked better. I was also better able to find my max overclock with ATITool. For example, I'm at 920 core right now. If I go to 925, it artifacts, but at 920 it's perfect. When trying to use Rivatuner, it won't go to 920, it wants to jump all the way to 938, which won't work unless I turn down the shaders, and like I said before, turning down the shaders was a negative for my particular setup in 3Dmark06, by about 800 points. Just something to think about.
