Recommendations for New HD for ICH9 southbridge?

Hey guys. I've been in the market for a new HD as of late as my current Seagate 40GB PATA seems to be...insufficient in both space and performance (it sucks). Seagate and Western Digital are the companies I'm looking at. I've been out of the loop on recent HD advancements but Seagate's new 7200.11 drives have been getting a lot of praise lately for the 32MB cache. Normally, I would go with the crowd but reading all the negative reviews on several vendor websites for a high ratio of dead drives and clicking noises made me think twice.

My IP35-E motherboard has 4 SATA ports, without the ability to utilize RAID so I just really need a recommendation on a reliable 250gb or 500gb drive that performs well. My budget is $120 USD, and I've been thinking about the WD 500 Caviar SE16, despite the fact that Seagate's 7200.11 drives are faster. Which would you recommend?

I have heard good things about the new WD 320GB single platter models. Read this thread:
http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...latter-wd.html

These drives seem to beat even a Raptor (except for access times of course).

I dunno. I personally own 5 Seagate HDDs, and none have yet to fail on me :/
But the thing is, they are 7200.10 and lower.

I have a 7200.11 and it rattles like a mofo. I honestly thought I had a piece of metal in my HSF =X

Get the WD man, save yourself some noise

also... for some reason my HD performs xfers at less than 70mbs, which is pathetic for a HD =X

Yes I know that is four raided HDDs. BUT.. even for four drives in RAID, that's more than impressive.

and if you read the thread.... it's posted that a SINGLE drive beats a SINGLE raptor.. by quite a bit I might add.

Do you mind giving me the Item # or the SKU# for that particular WD 320GB drive? There are several 320GB Western Digital Hard Drives on Newegg and I don't know which one to order. Thanks.

I think they might be talking about this one here. But I'm not positive on that. I just ordered a second 250gig for raid last week and am kicking myself now that I see the performance of this 320gig. I'm really curious if this is the right one.

they WD3200AAKS is the 16MB.

I like the ST3500320AS which is the ST 500GB 32mb version.

p.s. if your drive rattle, have noise, sounds like a metal inside flying around.....back up asap and request RMA.....
