OCing My Q6600 B3

Thread Starter
So I've finally started overclocking my CPU. My goal is to get to 3.2-3.4.

Anyways, right now I'm at 3.0 with a vcore of 1.30. I've ran the Prime95 blend test for almost nine hours now and nothing has failed on me. Is that a good indication of a stable overclock?

I'm sure once I start pushing my OC more I'll have a few more questions for you guys to use your superior brain knowledge on

You should run the smallfts test for a minimum of 9 hours to know if its stable

Make sure you are using Prime 25.5 if you are using vista because it tests all 4 cores in one instance

. Sorry about that, I meant a 1.30 vcore. These threes are getting to me. So I should have ran a Small FTS test instead of the blend?

And yea I'm running version 25.6

Well running an hour is fine to start getting the feel for it. If its anything like my 3220 its heat that will be your biggest issue. It does really well up to 3.1ghz at about 1.31vcore underload. Above that and I have to start using alot more vcore to get really stable and the temps start getting out of control.

You will probably find a spot where increasing the vcore by a little bit doesnt really net you any more mhz increase, back down from that spot jsut a bit and test. THis will basically be the point of diminishing returns and is generally the sweet spot of the cpu. The highest oc with the most reasonable voltage.

Be sure to run memtest to make sure your ram is ok, then run your in windows test either prime/orthos/occt. I prefer occt and run that for around 6 hours or so. If it can pass that its good to go IMHO, everyone will have different ideas on whats stable from a few hours to 24 hrs,

Good luck

Is 1.30 the BIOS setting or what's read with CPU-Z at load-line? For 3GHz 1.3V (CPU-Z) is enough as should a NB voltage of 1.37 to 1.4.

If you're going for 3.2GHz you might want to try a setting of 1.35 (CPU-Z) just to make sure you have enough voltage for the stress test. With NB volts 1.45 to 1.51.

Here are my EasyTune5, Prime95, and Core Temp readings.

Also, at load using small FTS my cores are at 60, 60, 54, 52. An 8 degree difference seems pretty big, should I reseat?

Also, 1.3 is what is read in my BIOS.

You should only be concerned if all of the cores are being stressed at 100% at the same time. If the snapshot was taken while one or more cores were not at 100% while others were, no, but if they were at 100%, than reseating is something to think about doing. Download the All CPU Meter gadget. That should show if all cores are at 100% while testing.

The hottest core at 60C isn't too high though.

Umm. They're at 100% because I'm doing a stress test

So I'm having some trouble getting to 3.2 (400x8). Anything below 1.375 vcore produces a fatal error in Prime95. However, last week I was able to get to 3.2 at 1.33 vcore (using my old cooling setup, where temps were much higher). I've upped my RAM voltage to 2.1 but that didn't help. What else could be causing this?
