Daniel_K’s forum posts are reinstated, and the company promises to now do a ‘better job’ of working with third party driver developers

After facing a huge backlash from the Web community this week after Creative launched a crackdown on Daniel Kawakami’s (also known as Daniel_K) modded Sound Blaster drivers, the company has now backtracked on its previous position.

Daniel_K’s previous posts, some of which linked to his driver downloads, have now been reinstated, and Creative has posted an explanation on its forums. The statement says: ‘We have read the strong feedback about Creative's forum post regarding driver development by Daniel_k and other outside parties.’ The company also admitted that ‘outside developers have been very helpful to Creative and our customers by developing updates for many of our Sound Blaster products, and we do support and appreciate these efforts.’

That still doesn't change the fact that he was accepting donations for the drivers. Sigh. All I can say is that they are showing a serious weakness with this recent decision. But I suppose they made sure that Daniel_K doesn't get any money for his drivers (and of course, neither does Creative). I mean, they probably made this decision because they have made sure that he won't get any money for the drivers. Hmm, I'm being redundant now. Is there a CRC in the house?

Still a shame

what's done is done. probly would have commended Creative.

now it's just a matter of saving face. i say take a stance and stick with it even if its incorrect to others, if your own business reasons are valid they can all suck a sound card.

I don't really see a problem with donations. if he made you pay to get the software that to me at least would be a different story, but a donation is optional and doesn't really steal money from creative themself being as such.

He said donations were to allow him to buy new soundcards to work on.

He made a little over $150...you're going to say he's profiting from his drivers?

given the amount of people he helped, i'd say that he deserved all of it, and then some.

What? How can you not see what's wrong with that? He made money off of Creative's product!! I don't care if he called it "accepting donations". That doesn't make it okay!

Furthermore, I think this decision of Creative makes them a bunch of wimps. Yeah, a lot of people are going to be happy, but it's only going to teach other programmers that they might be able to get away with stuff they were previously afraid to try.

Sigh. Creative has no real men working for them.
