First Timer Overclocking, E43000, GBDS3

Thread Starter
Okay, so finally after a year I decided it was time to overclock my E4300. I've heard Gigabyte DS3/4s are pretty decent overclockers, so I gave it a shot. To start off I couldn't find the RAM timings like 5-5-5-X or whatever, which bothered me. So I set off to overclock. My settings right now are

CPU: 333X9 (3 GHz) +.1V
RAM: 800 (Default) +.1V
And I suppose thats all I have changed.

Anyway. so it's all working fine and all, so I start up CS:S at 3GHz to see if it would crash. Playing for about an hour, the computer studdered for a half second and restarted. Probably an overheat, right? So after a while I went back to 3GHz to give it another shot, except this time (Ghetto cooling) I took a (house) fan and I opened my case and put it right up in there on full speed. I play CS:S for another 45 minutes - 1 hour and it does the same thing. Quickly, I go into CMOS/BIOS (Whichever one it is) and check the temperatures. The system temp was at 38 or so, and CPU at 41. As far as I know I don't think these temps are ridiculously high. I continued to try and play and same thing happened.

I have a feeling that I need to tweak some different settings since I couldn't find the RAM timings or anything else that was mentioned. I'm aware that I'm probably doing this horrible wrong, and I've tried (breifly) to find a similar problem but I didn't see anything. I'd also prefer to have a personal answer to my problem.

Thanks a lot!

You have an "Award BIOS" when in bios you have to push Ctrl+F1 to expand the settings of your ram. After pressing Ctrl+F1 at the main bios screen then go in to your intelligent MOBO tweaker, and you'll see the ram tweak listings.

If your at 333x9 on stock VCore, then hats off to ya, most likely the reason your comp is resetting is due to insufficient VCore, try running at at least 1.4v

So would tweaking the RAM timings solve my problem?

EDIT: Okay thanks...I'll try it

Tweaking your ram shouldn't affect the stability of your O/C within reason, with relaxed timings like yours 5-5-5-xx you should be fine until you stabilize your O/C with more vcore. a cpu-z screenie of your CPU and ram pages would help me out

Also list what your settings are, i'm running 24/7 at 3GHz try these

Multi - 9
FSB - 333
VCore - 1.4v
RAM - 333 (4-4-4-12)
RAM Multi - 2
RAM Voltage - +.3v
MCH Voltage - None
FSB Voltage - None

Also make sure you have locked your PCI-e at 100

*Edit* This should help... Note that the DS3 has major Vdroop, I have her set @1.4vcore in bios.

As a first timer, a lot of this is odd stuff so..

Multi -9
FSB (Called CPU Host Frequency?) - 333
VCore - 1.325 (Is this what should be increased to around 1.4?)
RAM - MHZ 800, Raising this just causes failure to boot.
RAM Multi -
RAM Voltage - +.1
MCH Voltage - Stock (What does this control?)
FSB Voltage - +.1, works without +.1 but I raised just in case.

Sorry for all the questions, I would love to run a stable 3 GHz computer, maybe even higher! Thanks a ton

EDIT: I'll take some pics.

Can you tell us a bit more about your RAM? Like the manufacturer and the timings written on them? (usually 5-5-5-12 or something like that)

Ok, let me restart my comp and give you a settings picture of what you should run to get 3.0GHz 24/7.

Then I'll tell you what to do from there to get to 3.3+, note that you WILL need aftermarket cooling, or your WILL fry your CPU

The stock timings are 5-5-5-18. I have 3GB, 2x512MB and 2x1GB, G-Skill.

I'll post some screenies soon.

ALSO: I'd rather not go into the "Possible to fry CPU" area. I'm fine with 3GHz, it's quick and pwnage enough for me. Everyone, thanks for the wonderful help!

This is what you will need to get to 3.0GHz.... Note that it's for the CPU only, I don't know what ram you have, so don't mess with the timings yet
