Error Installing -any- OS :: SOLVED

Thread Starter
Motherboard: P9657AB-8EKRS2H
CPU: Q6600

I'm trying to install an OS onto a new build. Here's the problem:
When I try to install Vista it locks up at the "Since this is your first boot to windows build we'll now set it up" black screen. If I reboot it asks to be completely reinstalled.
When I try to install Ubuntu 8.04, burnt to a cd or dvd, it will immediately go to the BusyBox v1.1.3 without an error message. Or at least not one that's on the screen long enough for me to read it.
When I try to install Ubuntu 7.10, it will stop at reformatting the drive at 5% and then locks up.

It used to talk back about not getting any feedback on the floppy drive. I disabled the floppy drive and now this is what I'm getting.

I've disabled and enabled the L3 cache.

Please help.

last time i saw my pc get errors like that it turned out to be faulty ram... dont know how but i tried everything and it only worked when i replaced my ram. Maybe it will help

Most likely ram... bad ram can do strange things to a system.

It doesn't necessarily mean the ram isn't working however. Some motherboards just don't like certain ram sticks.

memtest?

I had this RAM in an older build that worked correctly. The same with every aspect instead of the motherboard. Sorry, I thought I had mentioned it.

@Version2, I'll try memtest. I didn't think of compatibility issues.

EDIT: Just to clarify, these stopping points are constant. It's always the same location where it stops.

Memtest ran through 2 passes without errors. Any other suggestions?

I just tried installing from an IDE CD to a sata drive. From a sata cd to a sata drive and now from a sata cd to an ide drive. I've tried different videocards. The only things I have plugged in are a keyboard and the mointor.

The only thing I haven't swapped out is the motherboard / CPU. I'm thinking it's the motherboard now, but how can I request a replacement when I don't know what's wrong with this one or if it's even the motherboard?

One last thing I just thought of.... the motherboard has an 8 pin addition instead of the 4 pin. The psu only has the 4 pin. I used it. I don't think this is the problem.

Ideas?

You could take a hdd from another computer and just see what it does, it might be a little screwy just because of the drivers from a completely different computer, but you should at least be able to get to the black windows screen before the login prompt shows up. Ive only done it a handful of times, sometimes it works, usually it doesnt, but it sure does let you know if the hdd is bad. Or, it might allow you to get an error message that you werent able to see before that deals with the problem.

the pins on the mobo might be an issue, but I think if it were, it wouldn't even let you get as far as you did, might only need it when oc'ing.

Its not the psu cuz i dont think u would actually get a boot up..
Try to find a friend that has a compatible cpu type or mobo and is willing to help. Also check for bios configs which i doubt its the problem but u never know... IDE block mode, smart, virus warning..
