i disagree go to toms hardware for the most part there is a direct correlation between 3d06 results and games

If you have a microcenter nearby, get a $199 Q6600. It's definitely cheaper than a E8400, and may fit your needs better if you're not a frequent system upgrader.

I still wish every day that I had a q6600 for a lot of reasons. Honestly you aren't going to specifically notice performance differences between the two (outside of encoding and multitasking, q6600 wins out) BUT, you will appreciate the fun of actually having a system you can enjoy overclocking and knowing that your cooling/tweaking have a direct correlation. With the wolfdale, it's simply stay under 1.36 and do the best you can. I even wish I would have stayed with stock cooling, it's that easy to o/c without fear of overheating. Not to mention temp sensors are terribad and you play a game of hoping you get a properly manufactured chip... Kinda pathetic for that kind of money IMO. I still love my processor, but I say again, if I had the choice, q6600 without question.

Get a dual core, by the time games take advantage of quads the Q6600 will be a turd and/or super cheap.

the only reason I went from my E4300 to the Q6600 is because It was compatable with my current motherboard, making it easier to upgrade piece by piece.

But Im trully glad I did it, I do some vid encoding, and audio editing as well, and this quad runs circles around my dual, as for gaming, I just dont see the big diff in performance between a c2d @ 4.0 or a c2q @ 3.2. IMO if your looking for superb gaming, you need to look into tri sli, or sli a pair of gx2's (or crossfire for you ati fans)

the diff in game performance when debating c2d and c2q is minimal.

If you want a cpu that you can throw anything at and not worry about it lagging, then quad is the shiz
