Need a new CPU..

Thread Starter
I've currently got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and I am in need of an upgrade.

So, I'm thinking a 6400+ Black or Opteron 1220 Santa Ana.

I have an AM2 board and I am not willing to buy an AM2+ or Intel motherboard.

What are your suggestions?

Honestly, i don't think you will see that much of an improvement, at least for it to be worth it. If it were me, i would just save my money and upgrade the motherboard and processor later.

Id keep the processor if you dont plan on going am2+ or intel. Buy a capable heatsink and overclock your chip. Its a brisbane so you should have no trouble hitting 3.0 ghz+

Nope. Not a brisbane. I purchased it when the 6000+ just came out ($600) and mine was around $300.

Wow...I don't even remember the prices being that high on the AMD AM2 processors. Is that the max your CPU will clock?

I honestly don't think you will see a difference between them. From purely a good advice point of view, save up for a cheap P35 board and jump ship to intel. Either the E21xx series or the E8xxx series will serve you well and will be an upgrade over your current CPU.

Please no fan boy remarks, I've owned both a 3700+ and an X2 4200+ and both are absolutely blitzed by my current E2160 put together.

If you MUST go AMD, consider the Phenom 9500 which is a cheap quad core and will overclock decently.

You're assuming the OP wants to overclock, but in either case at stock or overclocked the 6400 will outperform the E2xxx series, but not the E8xxx. The current E2xxx chips do not overclock as well as those fabbed before the E2200. Unless you get lucky with a cherry E2160, a 6400 overclocked will smoke it.

The 9500 is a B2 stepping phenom that suffers from poor overclocking and decreased performance after enabling the bios fix for the cache bug. Would not recommend as an upgrade.

I'd go with the E8400 and a P35 though. 4GHz on air what more could you ask for?

whoa man you are makin my s754 3700+ clawhammer look old school.

i would keep the proc, and save for a new vid card. but, if you really do want another processor, i would go with the 6400+ BE.
