How to get XP to recognize 3.5GB mem

Thread Starter
I've seen other people's computer Windows XP recognizing 3.5GB of memory. How do I get mine to also be recognized as 3.5GB instead of 3.0GB? I'm running the 32-bit version of XP by the way.

I'm not sure it maybe a fluke deal (someone else maybe able to confirm or deny) But ever since I downloaded the sp1 for vista my computer shows 4gb instead of 3.2.

32 Bit recognizes 4GB total, but most people don't know that video memory counts into that so you subtract how much video memory you are using, which in your case should be 1GB or SLI 512's. If your not running SLI (don't know if your sig rig is up to date, then you should try testing your sticks because 1 might be bad.

It shouldn't come up as that since your using a 32-bit, but then again I don't know if Vista counts memory like XP does, I don't think it would matter since it's still a 32-bit system. But someone else should be able to clarify.

In the upcoming service pack for XP, and the SP1 in Vista, both 32bit OS's will display that 4GB are present in your system configuration, but will continue to only be able to address 4GB total, including Video Memory, add in cards and IRQ assignments.

Just because it knows that there is 3.5GB of memory doesn't mean that it can use all of it. The patch that allows 32 bit OS to display the correct amount of ram is there only to let the end user know that nothing is messed up.

Meh, it's confusing since everyone is used to reading 4GB total. But thanks for clarifying

Maybe it's time to pop in that old 2mb AGP video card?
