So why did the G80 come with an IHS?

It seems if the GPU can make direct contact with the heatsink you would get better temps than if the GPU had an IHS in the way of the heatsink.


So why IHS on the G80?

The NV40 (6800) had a 130 nm process and I do recall that it was a bare chip without an IHS.

The ATI 1950 was a 90nm process and was also left bare.

Also, if the die is so big on the G80, adding an IHS will make the die (appear) even bigger.

It is on a 90nm process, with its large transistors and large amount of them, the die is quite big.

With the 8800GT's they are G92, with a 65nm process, and even more transistors (but smaller) doesn't need one.

Also, it really would be nice for them to come with an IHS, that way coolers can put more pressure on them, plus there is less chance for damage to the core.

Did you read my previous post?

No offense, but you basically said the same thing the other 2 posters said....just in a different way.

And coolers make the same pressure on the GPU regardless of IHS or not. There aren't aftermarket coolers that are made specifically for GPUs with an IHS.


Does anyone know the real reason?
