I am going to start a project of converting all of my music to a new format and store it on my external HD so that I get better sound in my car stereo system. Which format is going to give me the best SQL?

AFAIK FLAC is completely lossless and m4a is still lossy. So I would say FLAC will give you the best quality, but will be larger. Also, if you are converting current lossy audio into a lossless format there will be no quality difference as you cannot increase quality.

FLAC and Apple Lossless are two different forms of lossless codecs. FLAC isn't supported by many mainstream media players which is a problem. Keep in mind that not all .m4a files are lossless.

As far as sound quality go with FLAC or ALAC if you are using iTunes.

Yes you would have to go directly from the source to get the optimal quality. Converting mp3 to m4a or flac will result in only taking up more space.

Nothing inside legal boundaries that I know of unless you can buy them from iTunes or Napster or something of that sort, or rip them all yourself.

Use EAC to rip the music and then dbPowerAmp if you wish to convert.
