Cooling Noob, Need Heatsink Suggestions

Thread Starter
Ok so as soon as my laptop gets sold I will be building my own computer, for the processor I'm getting an E8400, at first I was thinking about using the stock cooler until I wanted to OC, but then I thought well I might as well get a good heatsink now and avoid the trouble of removing the stock cooler later. My budget for this is around $70 + a few for shipping.

After looking through the air cooling section I see a lot of people using the TRUE, but after looking on newegg I only found THIS. I'm not sure if its the same thing because there is no extreme on it and I found another newegg page that listed the TRUE but said it was discontinued or something. Plus the TRU doesn't seem to come with any fans and I don't want to pay an $25 for a few fans...anyway if this is truly the best heatsink, I might just get it anyway, but if there is anything else out there please direct me to it.

Also I'll probably running this thing caseless so size really shouldn't matter. Oh and the board I'm going to be using is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. Thanks for any help!

the true is a pretty good choice but ive seen really good temps off this cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233003. read the customer reviews for proof. there are many reviews from like tomshardware and stuff, plus its cheap.

I think your choice of thermalright is a good one. You should get the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. One good site is heatsinkfactory.com. You are correct, you will need a fan. Some good fans are the Scythe S-Flex, which is really good quality, but on the expensive side; there is the Silverstone FM121 (or FM122, FM123) which come with a speed controller, but can be quite loud and expensive; there is the Scythe Slipstream, and some others such as Panaflo and Yate Loon. If this may seem to expensive considering shipping and all that, you may be best going with a relatively new heatsink with a fan called the Noctua NH-U12P. It performs as well as the TRUE does. If this is still too much, go for the Tuniq Tower. Enjoy your new pc!

The 8400 is not as hot as other processors. My Zalmann 9500 and Antec case keep mine at53-54C at load.
