Quick Question

Thread Starter
I just recently purchased the following hardware:
- AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core CPU
- Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G mATX AM2+ 1PCI-EX 2PCI SATA W/RAID Video Sound GLAN 1394 Motherboard

And I am wondering if I should be running Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit to utilize the full potential of my CPU. I understand there are mixed opinions of 64 bit because of driver support. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

32 bit will run fine on that, how much ram do you plan on using because that will be a determining factor as well..

with the new vista SP1, 32 bit now recognized 4gb of ram

If you have to ask about a 64bit OS, then you should probably stay away from one.
Performance wise you wouldn't see a difference.
Driver issues are a relative thing. They only affect you if you can't find the drivers you need. So, if you want to run a 64 bit OS, it would be a good idea to try and locate the drivers you will need before installing it.

I am running 4x1GB RAM sticks of DDR2-800 OSX Platinum. Lysdexik, do you find 64-bit to be an advantage over 32-bit for your Intel quad core CPU?

Keep in mind I am not overclocking my system (yet).

sorry, I forgot to change that in my sig I run 32 bit currently because I didn't figure in the 64 bit to my budget when I was building my computer, but I would wait on the 64 bit because of all the incompatibilities.. I have also heard that with 64 bit there are alot of problems with video such as games that don't require alot of power to use being very glitchy.. fixing sig lol

billbartuska, thanks for the words of warning.

I am curious towards why the 64-bit XP and Vista OS have even been released, if:
A) There is no performance increase in using 64-bit over 32-bit...
B) Drivers are still lacking

Please advise. Thanks!

If you are running 4GB or more of ram, you go 64, fullstop
The 64bit XP version didnt catch on, the Vista 64bit though is, and it does have good driver support!
Since you are running a nice system with 4gigs of ram, if i was you i'd go with vista 64 and not look back.

Interesting... Even though Lysdexik says there are alot of problem with video and gaming? Or do you suggest going 64-bit only if I am not to be gaming? (And then wait for the driver support to be there for 64-bit gaming)

Also, this kind of changes things if there *is* indeed a (potential) increase in performance by using 64-bit Vista. ...Utilizing over 4GB of RAM! lol

So my real question is would I see performance increase in using 64-bit Vista with my Phenom 64 Quad Core CPU or would it be exactly the same as using 32-bit Vista for my processor speed?

Thanks!

you will see a performance increase in any program that is written that takes advantage of more than 4gb of RAM. I'm running x64 and have absolutely no driver problems at all. Games all run fine, at least the ones i play. You MIGHT have issues if you try and run the original doom or quake. x64 allows for much greater memory address space, and many software programs will start to take advantage of that. General rule of thumb: 4 or more GB or RAM needs a 64 bit environment.
