Hmm, so many choices.

My other criteria which I forgot to list, is that I need this card to be fully compatible with my Abit IP35 Pro. Its not a PCI-E 2.0 board. I haven t researched the new cards to find out if they are totally backwards compatible or not, but I don't need features that I cannot use with this board.

PCIe2.0 is backwards compatable with earlier versions. Fear not. For priceerformance amazingness your best bet is the 8800GTS 512. At your resolutions, you wont need a GTX. If you look around, you can find an 8800GTS 512 for ~200$ after mir.

Thats an 18k card if fiddled with correctly.

Excellent info. Thanks for that. However since I am a power freak, I would like to go GTX. I can hunt around on my own as far as prices go, but as for a card a step higher, what would my options be?

None of the 9 series cards have anything above 512mb of ram and a 256bit bus to carry it on (except the GX2, but thats still 2x512, etc). If you are a "power freak" you can try to hunt down an 8800gtx ultra. Or you can go ahead and shell out the 600$ for the GX2. I'd say an 8800GTS is more than enough. But go ahead with the GTX.

I would recommend a 8800 GTS 512, since the GTX has maybe 5-10% performance over it
The 8800 GTX is about $100 cheaper than a 3870x2

3870x2 $375 after MIR

8800 GTX 768mb $289 after mIR

I'm currently running an eVGA 8800GTS 512mb G92, and I love it. I have a friend with an 8800 Ultra, and after running comparisons between our rigs with very close to the same specs, his rig would get 3-4fps more on average, but my rig would win in situations with more "stuff" to process since my Q6600 has a high overclock.

The disparity between the cards is nil when it comes to performance, and you'd be much better off going with the GTS for the lower price and pocketing the extra cash you'd be saving and putting it towards a new PSU (seeing as how it's your weakest piece of equipment after you upgrade your graphics card).
