Do 1 of 2 things.
1) Call your local ATT provider and ask for the corporate office number and speak with someone there.
2) Find out the regular ATT service number, you know when you dial 611 the people you speak with, and talk to them.
They are not out to sell you anything. They are there to service the phones. That is how I found out about the Verizon thing. I called the service number to ask questions and see about reducing it, etc. and the lady said "I don't know why the person in the store said you couldn't work with no data plan"
I laughed and said..."Oh I think we both know why...." Because technically what they sign you up for is a pay as you go data plan. So you have to make sure you remove the access numbers so your phone can't connect to their wireless data network.
For Verizon there are 2 connection profiles that dial a number #777 or #7772 with a login and password thats pre-configured. So I go in and delete those connection settings. If I soft-reset my phone...the profiles are automatically rebuilt. Once again a way for Verizon to try and screw you.
But either way...the Iphone has the connection information as well...plenty of places on google that tell you how to remove the login information etc so it can't physically connect to the network.
Oh and the last time I called Verizon service the lady actually said there was a way to put a block on it so no Internet could go out anyway. I had her do that just in case I forgot to delete the profile after a soft-reset and my wife grabbed the phone to do something and downloaded a bunch of stuff without realizing it
