8800GTS Overclock question

Thread Starter
I have the BFG 8800GTS OC2 320M graphics card and have tried overclocking it with Riva Tuner with success, i got about an extra 15% - 20% more frames in 3DMark06. My question however lies with more speed. I currently have it set to 670 Core, 1559 Shader (Left link set on in Riva Tuner) and 887 in Memory, if I set it much higher then that when I am running 3DMark it comes up with "Video card lost" or something to that effect after running for a few minutes. Now I have read in these forums that people have set it to 750 Core and 1024 Memory using Riva Tuner alone so I tried that and got an instant PC freeze. I would like to know how to overclock it further as the BFG heatsinks are F^&king huge and overclocked with my settings and fan set to 100% it stays around the 70'c - 72'c mark after running for a good 30 mins in 3DMark. So i pretty much want to know:
1. How can I overclock it as much as the other guy did?(http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/3109...overclock.html)
2. How can I stop it insta freezing when I try and
3. How can I stop it loosing the card in 3d mark or rebooting the PC in a game when I overclock it further then what I have as it seems people have clocked it a lot higher without volt mods (Which I don't want to do due to the card having a lifetime warranty)

PS: The PC is in my sig

Edit: Also unsure if BIOS overclocking would make it any more reliable or if its the same as software but without the software so if someone could answer this it would be great too!

650mhz is good imo for a 320Mb GTS. The thread you've linked is to a 512Mb G92 GTS, it has a different chip to your card. Your card is a G80 the 512Mb GTS is a G92 thus the difference in overclock. 750mhz is way to much for a 320Mb G80, no wonder it instantly froze.

As said 650mhz imo is a very good OC, my XFX 320Mb would only go as high as 614mhz. Try just increasing your shader and memory, if you're looking for more OC.

As for bios flashing, if you don't know what your doing it can turn messy. Basically it sets the cards stock speeds to the overclocked speeds that you want permanently. Me, I've always just OC'd my GPU in Windows, prior to gaming.

My main thing is that the card is running cool...I want to overclock it more because it is only running in low 70's. I have never really had a cooler this big so in the past heat was my limiter, so i figured as long as it was running at an appropriate temperature you could overclock it as much as you want?

No, there'll come a point where it just won't take it, in my experience anyways.

My temps stayed very cool on my 320Mb GTS 46/7c idle, only went upto about 60/4c load.

But even so, the core would cause artifacts with even the slightest increase, during a 10min ATi tool artifact scan.

Samething is apparent with my new 512Mb G92, idles at 38c with the fan at 79%, loads around 50/55. But even the slightest increase beyond 820 on the core, and it doesn't like it.

As said though if you want more OC, try going at the shader and memory. My core would only go to 614 but my overall clocks where. 614/1600/2020, so imo you should be able to squeeze more out of the shader and mem.

Will try pushing the rest then when i get a good couple of hours spare! And thats what I thought with the BIOS, that it is basically just a permanent software clock.

650 is VERY much 'the norm' on those cards, I used to have one myself, mine went a little higher, but not much. 8800GTS 512 is an entirely different chip, so don't expect to see the same overclocks.

As others say, sometimes heat is a limit to one's overclocking capability, but that's by no means always. Just as often it's simply the practical limits of the chip, especially if one does not increase the voltage going to the chip.
