Performance Advice

Thread Starter
I have the P5K Premium as my mobo and I'm looking at at upgrading my cpu from my E6850 to either a Q9450 or Q6700. My question is which will be an overall better performer? Please bear in mind I 'm not a big overclocker and will be using air cooling. I would be happy with say a 3.2 to 3.6 stable OC. At the moment my bios does not support the Q9450 but I hear Asus is working on it. I can get the Q9450 for $379.00 or wait until about April 20th and get the Q6700 for about $270.00. What do you guys think? Thanks for your advice and opinions.

the Q6700 has a higher multiplier, so it will overclock easier. Also, there is only a minor improvement clock for clock with the Q9450.

I would get the 6700 because its cheaper, and the motherboard will support it.

Go with the 6700. It's cheaper and is compatible with your motherboard as we speak. As has already been said, the clock for clock difference is negligble and the 10x multiplier of the 6700 is nice.

Thanks for the advice . Do you think that I'll have a problem cooling the Q6700? I use a Zalman 9700 and have 5 (120mm ) Antec case fans installed.

So is it smething wrong with your E6850? It seems that upgrading from your E6850 to Q6700 isn't a big upgrade.

True, unless he's folding.

The Zalman should be ok. Its not the best, but you should be ok for 3.4-3.6

There's nothing wrong with the E6850, but would perfer to have a quad due to using photo shop, and video rendering. Thanks for the help. What cpu cooler would you advise?

OK. Then go for Q6700 or Q6600. Your cooler should be fine for these G0 chip around 3.2G/3.4G.
