What is the purpose of cybergaming?

Hrmm...ok, going to start writing a composition here so excuse me a bit on lengthy writing

I have given lot of thoughts to why am i cybergaming till these days. I am 24 years of age and is currently studying for my business degree. I realise the importance of time and believe that there must be a reason behind everything.

I got home after school and switched on my PC to listen to some music for relaxation. Suddenly, i look through mine desktop which is filled with the shortcut icon of 10 over game titles.

I asked myself what is the aim of playing all these games. What can i get out of cybergaming beside the excitement and the in-game rankings. Excitement and in-game ranking are nothing more than just intangible possession; thngs which you can't really feel the benefit of. I mean a high in-game ranking would certainly boast our electronic ego BUT as we all know PC games titles comes and go swiftly just like the water flowing down the river except for a rare few like SC and WC3.

Crysis, COD4, Supreme Commander, Forged Alliance... i have them ALL but what is the point in having and playing them blindly. Do i have a goal in playing them? Personally, i don't consider attaining a high in-game ranking as a goal. What i am seeking is a more realistic and practical form of payback, achievement and awards directly linked to real life experience.

So i have come to a conclusion that i might well focus only on playing those games which are bound to be WCG titles. RTS games like SC and WC3, and others like Age Of Empire is becoming popular WCG titles every year. I feel safe to say that SC and WC3 will continue on its tour down the future WCG.

By focusing on these popular WCG titles, at least i know that i have a realistic and practical goal - to win the champion title for the games i focus hard on. The rewards are very practical and realistic - cash awards, fame, recognition, self-achievement etc and much much more which i believe you guys can find out from the WCG champions themselves.

With a goal in mind, only then will i know that i am not wasting precious time and have a sense of direction of where am i heading to.

I couldn't agree with you more- I think video games are a waste of time. Others, however, love the comrodery and the relaxation that a video game gives. I used to play tons of video games, but now I go outside and exercise for relaxation. To each his own...

Yeah, time is limited. We still have to pay the gym a visit like twice or thrice every week, study for our qualifications, socialize with friends and there so much more.

Therefore, i feel that cybergaming must have a realistic and practical purpose before allowing ourselves to sink into it blindly.

So far, winning the annual WCG title is the only 'goal' i can think of to continue cybergaming.

I know that feeling, I get it everytime I see one of the guys down the hall skip another class to play WoW.

Personally relaxing after classes is either sitting motionless and thoughtless staring at a TV, or sitting in front of my computer, trying to think of how to out flank some bots in World in Conflict.

Some people play to socialize with their friends. Not everyone like to go play pool, or watch a new movie.

A second note, the electronic ego thing. Some people like the internet because people never have the opportunity to be prejudice, everyone has fair chance and in the end you are excepted for being you, and not how you look.

You could say the same type of things about reading a book or watching TV, they sometimes provide you with knowledge and information, and other times it's just a relaxing and casual activity.

Agreed thoroughly on your insight. It just that i have a desperate need to find a goal or something close for cybergaming. This very goal will convince me that i am not wasting my time. I socialise everywhere, from school to cafe to corridor and of course the internet. The world smartest invention i must say is the internet which link people all over the world together. This is globalization.

Allow me to answer your question with another question. Why do we NEED to have a goal? Is it not enough just to say that it's something that we enjoy. Aren't there other things you do simply to enjoy? Enjoyment can be considered a goal if you like but it seems that you have overlooked it.
