The 9 series might be something worth mentioning if the GTX+ had 768mb ram with a 384bit bus. But because it doesn't...

I'd go with the 3870x2 over the 9800GTX. A single 3870 will generally not perform as well as a single 9800GTX, but the dual-GPU 3870x2 will triumph (awesome word) over the 9800GTX in more cases than not.

I will go for the 3870 X2 also, and with the ASUS ROG X2. It has a better cooler than the reference cards and the option (useful for some) to unlink the 2 3870 chips from crossfire to have 2 cards and 4 DVI outputs for 4 monitors.

The 9800GTX (you may as well call it 8800GTS OC) could be better if using AA, but at 1920*1200 I doubt you'll be able to put much AA and still have anything more than a slideshow.

With newer drivers the X2 can only get better, while the 9800GTX being a rebranded 8800GTS can't have much of headroom as drivers are already mature.
