The term CPU is no longer correct! - Page 12

No

The CPU is the central part of a computer which handles all the processing so that still makes it a Central processing unit.

I agree, it is essentially the "brains" of a computer. A MPU would suggect multiple CPUs running in one machine like on the new Intel skulltrail platform.

Well a Unit can be anything from 1 to 50 cores as long as it's in the same area. Also it is the Central Processor that everything (well almost) must pass through.

I feel CPU is still a valid term. Processor is easier for me to say aloud but CPU is easy when I post stuff.

Core 2 is based off the Yonah moblie CPUs. Intel realized that their mobile CPUs were much better than their desktop CPUs. Therefore, they used the mobile part to redesign the desktop part.

I disagree with evoman,pc has a brain made of several parts.

Memory part (i mean, files): Hard drive
Nervous (or wth its called):Keyboard and mouse or any other controller
Ordering part:CPU(makes the response)
Getting the response back to nervous:Random Access Memory
Brain's Seeing Central:GPU makes the incoming graphics right and transfers to Monitor
(Very Important)HUMAN:Controls every single thing.

Here's a ton of reasons why it should stay named CPU:

1. Central Processing Unit refers to the entire chip, not the cores.
2. Central Processing Unit refers to how it does all the central processing of a computer.
3. MPU or the other alternatives you offered make no indication as to their usage in a PC.
4. 90% of the world still doesn't know what a CPU is.
5. There's no need for a change. I have never had a problem determining if a CPU was a single, dual, or multi core processor.
6. Last thing we need are more terms.

Central processing Unit because
1. Its one Unit.
2. Its the brain of the computer.
3.it processes stuff.
4. Why change it now?
Its been like that since the dawn of computers. That would be the dumbest thing to do is change it.

Core 2 is based on a new architecture, called Core, which is based on Pentium M’s (which is based on Pentium III’s - as you will see on next page, Core 2 CPUs report their Family ID as being "6", the same one as Pentium Pro, Pentium II and Pentium III).
Source: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/348

Don't talk about what you don't know...I think I know a bit more than you about architectures apparently...

You can even do the test. Take a pentium 4 and use CPU-Z.

Do the same for a Core 2.

Hey! the Pentium 4's Family ID is 7 while the Core 2's Family ID is 6 (aka same as Pentium 3).

True. Adding to that, Yonah was based off P6.

The Intel Core microarchitecture (previously known as the Intel Next-Generation Micro-Architecture, or NGMA) is a multi-core processor microarchitecture unveiled by Intel in Q1 2006. It is based around an updated version of the Yonah core and could be considered the latest iteration of the Intel P6 microarchitecture, which traces its history back to the 1995 Pentium Pro.

Same architecture all the way back to Pentium Pro.
